A Message from The Superintendent

@lmussoline

You can't turn on the TV or click on the internet these days without seeing the steady increase in the number of measles cases across the United States.   As of yesterday (Feb. 5), Pennsylvania's Department of Health reported only one confirmed measles case in a child living in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health urges all residents to be vaccinated against measles.   The MMR vaccine is given to toddlers when they are 12 to 15 months old and a second dose at 4 to 6 years.

According to acting PA Physician General Dr. Rachel Levine, adults and children who have received the two recommended MMR doses have immunity and don't have to be vaccinated again.

"For those children who have not received the two MMR doses," said Dr. Levine, "its important to understand that the MMR vaccine is safe and highly effective."

Transmission occurs with direct contact with infectious droplets or by airborne spread when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes.  The measles virus can remain infectious on surfaces and in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area.

The Downingtown Area School District joins the state's Department of Health in urging parents and staff to make sure that all immunizations are up to date.   Measles is a highly infectious, airborne disease and is a reportable disease to the health department. If exposed to measles, children and staff without documented immunity must be excluded from school for 25 days.

We will continue to educate our students on the importance of hand washing at school, and to remind them that good health practices  reduce the spread of germs, flu, and other illnesses.

  Home Access Center/Parent Portal Changes

Want to know how your child is doing in school?   Beginning on Friday, February 6, 2015 DASD parents will have access to more information than ever before thanks to upgrades in our Home Access Center/Parent Portal. New features will allow parents and guardians to have the most updated information available to them 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

Why are we making these changes?

  •  To increase and improve school to home communication about student achievement via weekly emails with grade updates
  •  To better partner with parents around their child's achievement in school
  • To encourage conversation at home about assignments and school work
  • To encourage a more informed parental base so that there will never be a time where a parent would say, "I didn't know about the academic progress of my child."
  • To improve dialogue between parents and teachers if there is a need to conference at any point during the school year.

Should a parent forget their username and password, they are urged to call their child's school office to redeem this information.

Beginning today - "How's my child doing" is just a mouse click away.

Congratulations to our 20 Bike Rack Design Semi-finalists

Thanks to a unique partnership between the Downingtown Area School District, Downingtown Borough, Downingtown Main Street Association and the Downingtown Community Education Foundation, a student designed bike rack will soon appear in the Downingtown Borough.

Kindergartners through 12th graders were invited to submit a bike rack design. Of the 60 submitted designs, most were drawn with markers and crayons, but others were made from pipe cleaners, balsa wood or generated on a computer. Students could submit as many designs as they wished. The racks had to be designed to hold two to six upright bikes and withstand all types of weather. Suggested ideas from the organizers included incorporating recycled materials, bike-related elements, or symbols of Downingtown.

On Wednesday, January 28, 2015 twenty designs submitted by students attending DASD schools were selected to move forward to the next phase of the Bike Rack 2015 Competition. Miniature models of these designs will be created by volunteer technology students in Downingtown high schools. The twenty models will go on display for the public to enjoy.   A panel of judges, representing a variety of Downingtown organizations will vote for the winning design.

The 20 selected designs were submitted by student artists attending the district's high schools, middle schools, 6th grade center and elementary schools. Two artists had more than one design selected. The judges looked for innovation, creativity, designs that were "uniquely" Downingtown and whether the imagined bike rack could actually be created and placed on a Borough street.

Semi-Finalists are:

Aditya Chavan, Grade 2 - Shamona Creek Elementary School
Ryan McSherry, Grade 2 - Shamona Creek Elementary School
McKennzie Smith, Grade 3 - Brandywine Wallace Elementary School

East Ward

The fifth grade at East Ward Elementary School participated in the Great Kindness Challenge.  Over the course of the week the fifth grade logged over 700 kind acts.  Some of those kind acts included: complimenting a classmate, giving a teacher an apple, making a card for their first grade buddy, writing a nice note to a classmate, and simply making someone smile.  To go along with this week, many spirit days were established to bring the school even closer together.  Pictured below are Crazy Hair and Clothes Day and East Ward Spirit Day.  Even though the challenge only lasted one week, the fifth grade has vowed to continue to perform these kind acts.

Uwchlan Hills

First grade at Uwchlan Hills held their first annual blanket party on Friday, January 30th and completed about 70 blankets to donate to Project Linus. A representative came to speak with the children earlier in the week.  This organization provides blankets to kids in need throughout the county through the local hospitals, fire companies, EMT and ambulance companies. Students had fun working together to tie and snip edges of colorful fleeces to benefit this service project. Way to go first graders!

Lionville Elementary

Fourth grade students at Lionville Elementary tackled tough new topics! This year, 4th and 5th graders will be challenged by a new questioning style called Text Dependent Analysis. Students will be expected to analyze grade-level texts and answer related questions using their own insights and evidence cited directly from the text. Our great fourth graders have been working hard to learn this new type of writing and came together as a grade level team to learn a brand new organizational style to help them on the road to success. Gathered in our large group room, students discussed what an introductory paragraph and thesis statement should look like. Later lessons will focus on the "body" of our essays and how we should State It (right a solid sentence to state our supporting reason), Cite It (find evidence directly from the text to support our statement) and 'Splain It (explain or analyze what makes our statement meaningful to our answer.)

Lionville Middle School

LMS Teachers Volunteer at Philabundance

On Saturday January 31, 6 members of the Lionville Middle School staff volunteered at Philabundance in downtown Philadelphia. Susan Nickerson, Denise Schmidt, and Paul Waber were cleaning and packing cabbage for distribution. They helped to distribute almost 5000 lbs. of cabbage to those in need in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Pam Hagerty, Carmen Tucker, and Peggy Hopton were working with a group that was packing food bundles for distribution to the elderly. They helped to pack almost 8000 lbs. of food for this project. It was fun and rewarding to be helping to ease hunger during the tough winter.

Once again, LMS had an outstanding showing at a local competition when our Mathcounts team took 2nd place at the Chester County competition this past weekend. Team captain, Alex Kalbach placed 10th and Gokul Murugadoss placed 3rd out of approx. 150 students from about 21 schools in Chester County. Since they placed second, there is a chance the Lionville team will win one of the 2 wild card positions and be invited to compete as a team at the state competition.   A great job by the team and Mrs. Caramanica!

The Lionville MS Cheer Squad continued our recent run of high placement in competitions by winning 3rd place in the annual Ches-Mont Cheer Competition held last weekend at Downingtown West. The competition was so fierce that the LMS team's final score was within 2 points of the first place winner.

West Bradford

WB Scientists Share Their Work...West Bradford's Science Fair took place on Friday January 16th. We had some really amazing projects presented and had judges from Downingtown East High School's AP chemistry class, our Science curriculum leader, and a school board member who helped us to prepare for the Chester Country Science Fair.  These students really worked hard to prepare some great projects. Eight students will be traveling  to the Chester County Science Fair to represent West Bradford. They are fifth grade students, Casey Epstein, Spencer D'Arcangelo, Maya Huberty, Lauren Haegele, and Will Shaulis. The fourth grade students are Tyler Mordosky, Ben Shaulis, and Luca Rodia. The first place winners in each grade level were Lauren Haegele in fifth grade and Tyler Mordosky in fourth grade. I am sure they will represent West Bradford well at the Chester County Science Fair in March!

DHS East

The Downingtown East students got a dose of musical culture on February 4, 2015 as they welcomed the Doc Gibbs Ensemble to present an assembly about African percussion and dance.

Doc Gibbs is one of the most sought after percussionists in the music industry today. He has played on more than 200 albums and toured with artists such as Whitney Houston, Wyclef Jean, and Erykah Badu. The ensemble was comprised of drummers, percussionists and dancers trained in all styles of African rhythms and dance. This Musicopia Assembly was made possible by a generous grant from the Valley Forge Music Fair Trust.

Downingtown STEM Academy

On Wednesday January 28th STEM students participated in assemblies from the Chester County chapter of Narcotics Overdose Prevention and Education or NOPE. NOPE develops its presentations to be very powerful and to speak to students about what they can do to help friends who may be abusing drugs and/or alcohol.  The main focus of the message was three simple ideas. Be a hero, tell someone if you have a friend who is using drugs and/or alcohol. The simple act of telling someone can help save a life. The combining of drugs and alcohol can make a person overdose; One time can kill. Also, they informed students about what the signs of an overdose can look like and the importance of making the call that can save a life.
