A Message from The Superintendent

It is always a pleasure to announce the results of the National Merit Scholarship Program each fall.  Students throughout our three high schools have been eagerly waiting to see if they are one in a million - literally.  Of the 1.4 million juniors who took the 2013 PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Program, only 16,000 have been named a National Merit Semi-finalist.  I am proud to announce that our district had 17 talented students earn that designation.  Seven more students than were named in the 2013-2014 competition.

These 17 semi-finalists make up less than 1% of US High School seniors.   Being named a semi-finalist gives them the opportunity to compete for approximately 7600 National Merit Scholarships, worth about $33 million dollars.  Their next step in the process to receive a scholarship is to submit a detailed scholarship application.  Finalists in the award program will be announced in February.

Congratulations to the following DASD students who are National Merit Semifinalists.

DHS East

Varun Giridhar, Angela Y. Cai, Megha P. Reddy, Helen P. Butler, Justin D. Chan, Megan L. Harley, Nikita Choudhary and Alexandra V. Cipriano

Learning a World Language in the Elementary Grades

Students in the elementary grades are exploring a world language via DASD's new Rosetta Stone program. Students have signed on to take Spanish, German, French, Greek, Dutch, Hebrew, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Swedish, Chinese and a sprinkling of other languages. Each student has his/her own headphones and they are accessing the on-line program via iPads once a 6-day cycle.

The program is being facilitated by our elementary Encore Teachers. Supervisor of Professional Learning Jennifer Saksa recently visited a first grade class being facilitated by EW librarian and curriculum leader, Claudia Carosella. During her visit she noticed that students required different levels of assistance with login, including help figuring out what letters were in their login, finding the letters, knowing which box to type the letters into, and understanding where to click to begin. Ms. Saksa will be investigating several keyboard learning tools for kindergarten and first grade students who need assistance in this area.

Once logged into the program, however, students quickly moved through the screens, repeating spoken words, selecting pictures to match spoken words, selecting pictures to match written words, and breaking down sounds into smaller chunks. Some students took their time with each task and earned a "green" mark, often whispering a 'YES' when the green check appeared.  Others went more quickly and earned an orange mark. Those who earned orange were encouraged to go back and try again, so they could turn their mark green. They did so eagerly.

We are also noticing that those who access Rosetta Stone from home are also finding great success when using it in school.  If you have an elementary student, enjoy some quality time with them some evening while they practice their Rosetta Stone Language Program.

Open House at Marsh Creek Sixth Grade Center Scheduled
The Marsh Creek 6th Grade Center in Uwchlan Township will hold its Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Sunday, October 12, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.  The community is welcomed to tour the school following the ceremony.   The school will be open until 3:30 for tours and visits.

To help fund the proposed Narwhal Nature Trail, (a hands-on exploratory trail with stations in biomimicry, conservation, soils, flora and fauna and more), we invite you to post a message or ad in the Opening Day Program Book that will be distributed on October 12, 2014.   Proceeds will be used to create the trail, build hands-on exploration centers, add benches, signage and more.

As mentioned in a previous issue of The D-Link, our 10 elementary schools now feature a buddy bench.   If you are feeling blue and need a friend to cheer you up, just sit on the bench and a friend will come your way - as they did above at Lionville Elementary,

September 17th was Constitution Day.  Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by thirty-nine brave men on September 17, 1787. To honor the occasion, Beaver Creek Elementary School held its annual event of gathering students around the flagpole and celebrating the day.   Students sang the Star Spangled Banner and the (memorized) Preamble was shared by the fifth grade classes.

DHS East shares its its annual 2014-15 photo of the senior class.

"The Experience", an After School Program
for Students in Grades 3 - 6.

The "Experience" is a seven week after-school program for DASD students in grades 3 - 6.   The "Experience" offers one or more fun, hands-on programs in each of the elementary level schools; Lego Robotics, Engineering, Forensics, Programming and World Languages are the classes offered in the Fall.   Each of the district's 10 elementary schools will host at least one of the offered programs in the Fall session.   The programs will alternate in the spring.

The "Experience" will run on Tuesdays,  October 28 through December 19 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.  (no school or program on November 4)  The cost of each program is $140 and includes all supplies and materials.  The only exception to this is the Springton Manor Forensic Program - that program will run on Mondays.   Transportation is not provided and parents must make arrangements to pick up their child at 5:30 p.m.

All programs will be taught by highly qualified education professionals who currently teach in the Downingtown Area School District.  High school students who excel in the selected areas will work alongside each teacher and guide your child in small group settings as they "experience" these important 21st century skills.

We are asking that children register in a program within the school they attend. However, should an opening in a nearby school remain available after the sign-up deadline date of October 20, 2014, we will open that course to outside students.  Parents who select this option must provide transportation both ways.

Please note that each course must have 15 registered students to run.  Should a class not fill by October 21, it will unfortunately be cancelled.

Additional courses may be added, so keep checking the website.
