 Superintendent's Update

Superintendent

This year we say good-by to 29 DASD staff members with a grand total of 646 years of experience.

If you look at any successful school district, you will find a healthy combination of experienced and new teachers. The new teachers bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm. The experienced teachers give the schools stability and serve as mentors to the new teachers.

On Saturday, many of our colleagues, parents and former students came together to celebrate the life and legacy of Karen Mapes, a DHS West English teacher who passed away on May 3, 2013. During the service several of her former students, from the 1980's through the graduating class of 2013, spoke of Karen's continuing role in their lives and careers.  Their words helped me understand more clearly how mentorship 'really' works between teachers and other teachers and between teachers and students. Certainly, Mrs. Mapes mentored 100's in her short stay with us as teacher and friend. It was an inspiring morning for every educator in the audience.

Those students remind us that every teacher, guidance counselor, administrator or support staff member can have a life-long influence on a student. Although they are only in your classroom for a few months, your words, enthusiasm and love of learning can strengthen a student's confidence and help them find their individual strengths. There are very few careers in this world that have such a tremendous responsibility.

As you prepare to leave us, please know that you will be missed by your colleagues and community. Enjoy your retirement!  The administrative team and school board members will be honoring our retirees at the Committee of the Whole meeting on June 5, 2013.

Dr. Larry Mussoline,
Superintendent

Around the District

Brandywine Wallace

On Tuesday, we enjoyed a visit by our future Sixth Grade Center principal Mr. Tom Mulvey at our Home & School Meeting. Parents were excited to meet and to listen to Principal Mulvey!

On Wednesday, first grade enjoyed The Dragon Singer, a performance by Stages of Imagination. This interactive theater experience was enjoyed by students and parents. In the afternoon, teachers began their professional development using the Math in Focus materials.

Beaver Creek

Our musical production, Seussical Jr., had a large cast this year with 67 performers. The show was colorful and entertaining. It is clear that the time, effort and hard work of all the students and Miss Molan really paid off. Speaking of talent, our Art Show and Spring Concert was an enjoyable, talent-packed event as well. It is great to see students learning the importance of dedication and practice. Thank you Mr. Andrus, Miss Molan, Mrs. Patterson and Mr. Breton (who will be missed at Beaver Creek next school year as he begins his retirement from DASD) for supporting our students and bringing out the best in them.

Bradford Heights

The Bradford Heights Spring Concert was held on Friday, May 10th. Once again Mrs. Patterson, Mrs. Cerasa, and Ms. Siegfried did an amazing job.  The students have worked very hard and dedicated many hours of practice to perform in this concert.  We have so many talented students in our building that introduced songs, sang solos, and played instruments to accompany the orchestra and chorus.  The chorus had help singing and dancing to Waka Waka by some of the faculty, while Dr. Solon helped the orchestra.  We cannot adequately express our thanks to our talented students for a wonderful concert.

East Ward
Students in East Ward enjoyed a visit from Benjamin Franklin on Tuesday.   Mr. Franklin spoke about his work building a young country called the United States.  He shared details about some of his more famous inventions.

Pickering Valley

Upper Uwchlan Township celebrated Local Government Day on Friday, May 1, 2013, by inviting the 5th grade to the Upper Uwchlan Township Building. During our visit, the students were introduced to all the things that local government does for its citizens.   On hand were Township Manager, Cary Vargo, Township Secretary, Gwen Jonik, and Chief of Police John DeMarco. Each official taught the students what their job was about.   At the conclusion of the program, the students learned the history of the former Pickering Valley one room school house they were sitting in. Thank you Upper Uwchlan for sharing Local Government with us!

 Uwchlan Hills

Saturday May 4th marked the first annual Uwchlan Hills Mud Run and it was a huge success! What started off as an idea, quickly gained life by the tremendous support of Bob Giering and Melissa Koons.  They paved the way for this Mud Run to become a reality and the numbers speak for themselves.  We had over 360 students from across the district come out and participate!   Many of the students ran through the course multiple times. There were obstacles ranging from a giant 60' wide slip and slide called 'Greased Lightning' to a muddy pit the participants crawled through called 'Kiss of Mud'. There was not a clean person to be found!  We can't wait to see what the mud run committee will come up with for next year!  Thanks to Josh & Kristen Davidson, Matt & Nicole Dockstader, Dave and Hope Latch and our Wellness Committee for creating such a fun event!  Of course we also owe a huge thank you to all of the amazing volunteers, sponsors and families that helped make this event so perfect!

LMS

Eric Carle is now at Uwchlan Hills School!  Students at Uwchlan Hills Elementary School are celebrating the art of illustrator Eric Carle between now and June 3.  This year's Art Exhibit, entitled "The Art of Eric Carle," showcases over 600 original painted-paper collages created by each and every student at Uwchlan Hills School.  From The Very Hungry Caterpillar to The Tiny Seed, this exhibit includes ladybugs, rubber ducks, butterflies, baby animals, caterpillars, seahorses, and the four seasons.  Under the direction of art teacher Krissy Krygiel Evans, students created an extensive collection of hand-painted papers that explore texture, analogous colors, and sgraffito (the art of carving into wet paint).  The painted papers were then used to create cut-paper, multi-layered collages.  Each grade level was inspired by a different Eric Carle book.  Besides art production and literature, students also learned about the life of this artist, and how his work was influenced by Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Dr. Seuss.  Our art show kicked off with an Opening Reception on Friday, May 3, complete with refreshments, music, a scavenger hunt, and student docents.  Please be sure to stop over to Uwchlan Hills School between now and June 3 to view "The Art of Eric Carle" in person.  Be sure to sign our guest book.

DHS West

For the last 30 years, WPVI-TV 6ABC gives an annual salute to academic excellence in area high schools. This year Ken Au was selected to participate.
