Superintendent's Column |
Greetings:
Next Thursday evening, I will be joining members of my administrative team and DASD school board members at the Chester County Safe School Summit. The summit will be held in the Owen J. Roberts High School. The summit, intended for all Chester County school administrators and school board members, has been planned over the past month in response to the tragedy at Newtown, CT.
The first part of the evening will consist of a panel discussion led by Chester County District Attorney Thomas Hogan, Esq. Joining him will be Chief of Police for the Owen J. Roberts School District Lawrence Mauger, Chester County Safe Schools Coordinator Chrissy DePaolantonio and Don Smith, Emergency Planning and Response Coordinator for the Center for Safe Schools. Following the panel discussion, members of my team will join several breakout sessions dealing with school safety. The topics include Risk Assessment and Technology Solutions, First Responder Responsibilities, Elements of Parent/Child Reunification, Communicating with Stakeholders Before, During and After a Crisis and Dealing with the Aftermath.
Superintendent
The district is moving forward with improvements to our safe schools plan. I would like to thank our local law enforcement officers for their assistance in studying and making recommendations to improve safety in our buildings, policies, and practices. On Wednesday I was asked by local Daily Local News Reporter Sara Mosqueda-Fernandez about these anticipated security implementations. The resulting article can be accessed by clicking here
My thanks to the Chester County Intermediate Unit's Division of Teaching and Learning for coordinating the Safe School Summit. Participating in these sessions are just part of our district's efforts to be as proactive as possible and to understand the procedures we would need to follow in any crisis scenario. We are pleased that all Chester County schools are working as a whole in this most important area.

| Inauguration Day 2013 |
"There was just something special about being there." That was the general consensus from the several hundred students attending President Barrack Obama's second inauguration on January 20, 2013. Although the students and chaperones could not get close to the Capitol due to the 700,000 + attending the ceremony, jumbotrons provided a close up view of the platform and participants.
Busses picked up students from the STEM Academy, DHS West and Downingtown Middle School on the morning of the ceremony. All were surprised that the busses were able to get into the city without too much difficulty. Although it took a short time to walk from the busses' parking spaces to the Mall, the groups found it more difficult to return to their busses due to Inaugural Parade road closures.
At the end of the day, students returned home with photos and memories to last a lifetime. |

| Community Compliments |
The Downingtown Community Education Foundation received three Community Compliment Donations this month. A DCEF "Community Compliment" expresses a parent or community member's appreciation for the great job a staff member has done and the impact he/she has had on the education of a child.
Compliments were received for Beaver Creek teacher Susan Welk and Lionville Elementary teachers Donna Koch and Stephanie Cole. The three teachers receive a "Star" card announcing the compliment.
A Recommended donation for a parent or DASD friend to make a Community Compliment is $10.00. These funds help support the DCEF's funding of our Teacher Venture Grant/Classroom Projects funding. Over $750 dollars has been raised through this program since its inception last year. Here is a full list of staff members who have been honored with a compliment.

Beaver Creek
On Monday, teachers participated in a day of professional development which included deepening their understanding of Differentiated Instruction and Total Participation Techniques. TPTs give evidence of active participation and cognitive engagement from all students at the same time. There are high tech methods such as student response clickers and low tech methods such as hold ups, chalkboard splash, quick-writes and quick-draws. Lessons that include effective checks for student understanding are about ten times as cost effective as reducing class size. TPTs could add between six and nine months of additional learning growth per year because with consistent use a student can learn faster. You can expect to see TPTs being used more frequently at Beaver Creek to enhance student engagement and achievement. Dr. Lawless went to a workshop in Philadelphia on Thursday to hear TPT professor/author Dr. William Himmele talk about and demonstrate some TPTs. Follow up on high tech methods will be provided for teachers.
Due to the forecasted snow, our popular Pizza Bingo night has been postponed until Friday, Feb. 8th.

Bradford Heights
The main stairwell at Bradford Heights is the showcase for the 2013 Science Fair Exhibits. Eighteen 4th and 5th grade students spent many hours researching and designing their projects. The varied displays are an amazing sight to see. The entire student body is welcome to take time to read the research and to see first hand the hard work and dedication that went into each project. The student work was judged by Mrs. Susan Quigley, Mrs. Karen Sklenar, and Mr. Len Palys. Our judges were very impressed with quality of each project.
The participants for this year's Science Fair were: Lily Zeblium, Aubrey Mabie, Gillian Christopher, Kennedy Zednick, Samantha Schultz, Melody Yu, Sean Herrmann, Shruti Velan, Luke Riordan, Jessica Harpel, Taylor Blankley, Kendall Henry, Tanner Peck, Christopher Duffy, Will Finegan, Kara Long, Kari Schmidt, Kelly Smith, and Isabella Chiappa. We are very proud of you for all of your hard work. The projects are wonderful.
The following students will be taking their projects to the Chester County Science Fair on March 9th. Lili Zebluim, Aubrey Mabie, Gillian Christopher, Kennedy Zednick, Samantha Schultz, Melody Yu, Sean Herrmann, Shruti Velan, Luke Riordan, Jessica Harpel, and Taylor Blankley. We wish you the best luck at the Chester County Science Fair. The Science Fair was a huge success due to the hard work and organization of Mrs. Graham and Mrs. DePalma, two of our 4th Grade Teachers.
Additionally, Mrs. Kate Cerasa has joined the Bradford Heights' staff as our new music teacher. Mrs. Cerasa has been getting to know the students as they come through her class. We are very excited to have Mrs. Cerasa on our team.
Brandywine Wallace
This week, BW fourth and fifth graders participated in the Cameron Evans Science Research Competition. Our annual science fair competition has been renamed in memory of former BW student, Cameron Evans. We were pleased to welcome the Evans family to our event and were glad to share information about childhood leukemia and the Cure for Cam organization.
Every student completed a project and shared his/her research with the rest of the school. This activity provided an opportunity for students to pursue problem solving, then plan and conduct a research investigation complete with data analysis. The projects showed a thorough understanding of the scientific inquiry process, creativity, and originality. It was difficult to determine the winners, and we are pleased to announce the following students will take their projects to the Chester County Research Fair in March:
Grade 4: Cole Springer- Do Words Hurt? Does Bullying/Praising Plants affect Growth? Christopher O'Grady- Which Ingestible Liquid is Absorbed Most by the Stomach? Megan Maslanka & Bryn Rochon- Flower Power: Which Liquid Keeps Flowers Freshest? Teigan Brown-Apple Oxidation: Which Apple Turns Brown Fastest? Will McNamara- Water Depth and Wave Speed
Grade 5: Adam Kiefner-Spud Sprouts! Can Every Eye on a Potato Sprout? Adam Wenk- Which Brand of Golf Ball Goes the Farthest? Kurt Campayo-Which Age Group has the Best Memory? Andrew Rowland-Does the Temperature of the Water Affect How Quickly Salt Dissolves? Tessa Datte- Is Smiling Contagious? Part 2
Congratulations to all of our participants and winners!! Special thanks to Mrs. Cain and Mrs. Sachs for coordinating this event along with their grade partners, Ms. DiMartin, Miss Kinderman, Mrs. Kauffman, and Mrs. Weisser. We appreciate the support of our many judges who included board members, Mrs. Cranney and Mr. Croft, K-12 Science Curriculum Leader, Mr. Daney, and K-12 Language Arts Curriculum Leader, Ms. Shipe. Mr. Chip Miller, from Cardiac Science, visited BW on Wednesday to train staff members in the use of the new AED machine. This unit was donated to our school by the Silva family in memory of former BW student, Aidan Silva. We were pleased to have Mr. and Mrs. Silva on hand for the training session as well.
Mrs. Leib has been invited to participate in the analysis and scoring of the new PSSA Writing Field Test. Throughout this year, PDE will be conducting various committee meetings to support the changes in the PSSA tests. Several years ago, Mrs. Leib participated in a PSSA range finding committee for the Reading PSSA.
East Ward
This week East Ward opened their doors in the evening to a wonderful program for families that have students in the 5th to 8th grade. The program is called Strengthening Families, and helps students and parents learn to deal with peer pressure and stress as well as enhance family communication. For one night a week for seven weeks, there is dinner, family activities and fun. Eleven families are participating in this program that was researched and developed at Iowa State University. The Strengthening Families program is supported by COAD and Downingtown CTC.
Grade 1 First grade is practicing telling time to the hour and half hour. We are also learning about the concepts of AM and PM and elapsed time. The kids are also learning how to name and locate the 7 continents and 4 oceans on a map!
Grade 2 Students in the second grade reading club read over 20 Henry & Mudge books. As a group they generated a list of common characteristics of the Henry & Mudge series. Students used these characteristics to write additional adventures for Henry & Mudge. The students' published books are now part of our grade level Henry & Mudge collection.
Students in second grade have also been learning about different types of technology. So far this year they have practiced typing skills, used Microsoft Office to create Power Points and Word documents, and practiced safe Internet browsing. The students have loved using the iPads, learning new skills to navigate the iPads and practice math and reading with apps!
Grade 4 Fourth Grade students are beginning to learn about "Living Things"; a science unit which focuses on ecosystems, biomes, and habitats. Students will be conducting experiments and recording data through using the scientific method.
In mathematics students are finishing up their Geometry units where they built Geodesic Domes that emulated the Epcot Center in Disney World.
In Being a Writer & Reading, students are starting their Fiction writing and are immersing themselves in many different types of Fiction Novels and picture books to help gain understating of what fiction writing looks like. As a culminating activity East Ward fourth graders will be creating their own graphic novels/fiction stories, which will be shared in a "Readers Café," classroom format.
Grade 5 Srinath Govindarajula won EW School Science Fair Runners up: Katherine Pan & Connor Fergus
Shamona Creek
Congratulations to the following students who participated in the fifth grade Spelling Bee: Grace Mucha, Sean Wang, Will Howard, Mia Zibello, Matthew Walter **1st Place, Sophia Alfinito, Jordan Lambe, Vishal Janapati.
The fifth graders at SC love using technology. Students use iPods to listen to the stories in the Harcourt anthology as they read along.
Uwchlan Hills
Since the month of October, fifth grade students at Uwchlan Hills have dedicated their time inside and outside of school to prepare for the Scrippts Spelling Bee. These individuals gave up one lunch period a week to devote their time with Mrs. Irrgang and Miss George to study numerous multilevel words ranging from third to eighth grade. Their hard work was finally put to use on January 18th at our 5th Grade Spelling Bee. All seventeen participants competed head to head to determine the winner who would move onto the National Bee to be held at the CCIU on February 8th. After twenty plus intense rounds with audience members hanging onto every letter, we finally reached our winner, Sophie Fromal. In second place was Nand Vommi, and in third place was Arushi Grover. The winning word was "pterodactyl".
The 2013 participants included: Alie Bendixen, Olivia Blevins, Laura Breslin, Francesca Chindemi, Megha Dhillon, Sophie Fromal, Arushi Grover, Nikolas Guidone, Celia Hadjin, Jimmy Hallinan, Drew Kalkiewiecz, Neha Kalebere, Lindsay Louis, Caroline Pfizenmayer, Aidan Sagherian, Grace Shaner, and Nand Vommi.
We congratulate all of our students for a job well done.
Downingtown Middle School
Sixty Downingtown Middle School representatives attended the 2013 Presidential Inauguration on Monday, January 21
Guys & Dolls The Downingtown Middle School production of Guys & Dolls is scheduled for February 8th, 9th & 10th. More information about the show and ticket sales will be available next week! Directors and student performers have been hard at work getting 'stage ready' for this annual event!
Home & School Fundraiser The DMS Home & School Association collected $500 from a fundraising drive held at Issac's of Lionville. For every sale that was accompanied by a fundraising voucher, Issac's contributed %25 of the bill. A special thank you to everyone who dined for DMS!
STEM Academy
Course Selection On January 31st the STEM Academy will welcome the incoming freshman class, Class of 2017, into the Academy at our welcome and course selection night. On the 31st we will give another overview of the program including courses in grades 9 and 10, the IB program, along with pathway and internship requirements. Please feel free to join us from 7 pm to 9 pm on the 31st.
Course selection for the Class of 2014 is fast approaching. Unlike other high schools, our course selection plans for seniors involve very few changes to their present schedules. Because all IB courses are two-year courses, students will take Year Two of the courses in which they are currently enrolled. A traditional course selection night for seniors at the Academy will not be necessary. In fact, each student's IB schedule will move seamlessly from Year One to Year Two, and the Pathways will continue to their next course in sequence culminating in a STEM Practicum
. As our students enter their final year at the Academy, in the second half of the year, students will participate in an Internship/STEM Practicum experience through our manypartnerships with area businesses and professionals. Over the next couple of weeks, Susan Boardman will be requesting all current junior parents to attend a presentation regarding the Internship/STEM Practicum experience. Susan Boardman will explain the program, outline potential experiences and answer any questions parents may have from parents about this exceptional opportunity for Academy students.
While all parents are welcome to attend course selection night, we will be focusing on 9th and 10th grades. Mrs. Boardman and Mr. Campbell will be available February 6th from 6:00-6:45 in the Knowledge Commons to answer questions regarding this exciting opportunity in the STEM student's high school career.
State Testing & Instruction Students finished three days of midyears, including individual assessments for English and modern language last week. The building operated on two schedules during midyears to accommodate for testing and curriculum. Immediately following midterms, the freshmen and sophomores will prepare for their upcoming Keystone exams, by taking their second study island bench marks. Three days of study island testing begin January 24th.
Students have begun choosing topics for their 400 word IB extended essay.
Davirah Tim-Dinkins and Leanne Perzel, Guidance Counsels, visited DMS and LMS to conduct their course selection presentation for our new academy students. Course selection for incoming freshmen and sophomores will be the first week of February.
Internships/Partnerships Susan Boardman and four of our engineering teachers (Jocelyn Long, Kaylia Austin, Kelli Divito, Janette McVey) visited Sikorsky Helicopter to tour their facility. They met with the Manager of HR and the Chief Engineer to discuss an integrated program with the STEM Academy. Sikorsky is putting together a 12 month program of speakers, mentorship relationships and eight summer STEM Practicum opportunities for our students.
Steven Henning of Cray Valley Hydrocarbon Specialty Chemicals visited STEM for a tour and discussion of partnering. Mr. Henning's company offered STEM Practicum opportunities for our students. The numbers have not been confirmed, as we look forward to the next step which is to visit their facility.
Mrs. Boardman met with the West Pharmaceuticals STEM team to discuss specifics for a STEM Practicum program. They have offered 10 STEM Practicums to be offered during the summer for our students.
