Learn Now or Pay Later! - Human Resources Lunch & Learn
When: Wednesday, May 22nd (11:30 am-1:00 pm)
Location: Salisbury Chamber of Commerce
Cost: $10/person
(Lunch will be provided)
Small businesses often leave Human Resources (HR) work up to the person with some knowledge or enough time to perform the hiring and recruiting, but there is so much more to HR.
It has been said that when performed incorrectly, HR can cost huge dollars and expose yourself and your business to enormous liabilities.
With the right tools in place, liability can be minimized and costs decreased or avoided all together.
The SACC Business Affairs Committee will host a Lunch & Learn Event that will include a variety of essential HR tools so you can "Learn Now" and not "Pay Later" . The event is led by experts in each field and will provide the opportunity to learn exactly what you do not know and sharpen the tools you have!
Topics Will Include:
- How to orient and train new hires (Increase performance, retention and job satisfaction)
- Handbook vs. Terms & Conditions (What do you really need for your size business)
- Progressive Discipline Techniques
- Wage & Hour Guidelines
Sponsored by BBSI & Labor Ready

National Bike to Work Week
National Bike to Work week is coming soon (May 13-17). We are planning to have a number of events that week, and it would be great if you could encourage your employees and constituents to join us.
The week will culminate on Friday (May 17) with National Bike to Work Day. There are many ways you can participate:
1. Join us at the Salisbury University tennis courts (Smith St & College Ave) at 7 am to bike the Orange route (SU to Downtown plaza). Bring your bike and helmet.
2. Join us at 7:30 am in front of Main Roots on the downtown plaza for free coffee. I would love to have the Mayor, City Council President and others say a few words about why biking is important to our community. Let me know if you would like to speak and I will put you on the agenda. At 8 am, we will wrap up any final comments and those who are riding to work by bike will depart.
3. Join us at 5:30 PM back in front of Main Roots to celebrate 3rd Friday. Everyone who bikes to work, to 3rd Friday, or both that day will be eligible for prizes.

Beads of Courage Fundraiser
Beads Inspired Salisbury 2013. This event is sponsored by Hill Street Productions and Millennium Microwave Corporation. All proceeds from this event will benefit The Beads of Courage program. The evening will be a celebration of the courage of the children in the program and all those with serious illnesses.
When: June 1, 2013 6:30 PM
Where: The Holiday Inn-River's Edge, Salisbury MD
Beneficiary:
The Beads of Courage program was founded in 2004 and is a support program for children with serious illnesses. Their mission is to help children and families coping with serious illnesses record, tell and own their story of courage.
Children who participate in the program receive colored beads that represent milestones, procedures, and acts of bravery. For instance, they get a yellow bead for an overnight hospital stay, a white one for chemotherapy, and a glow-in-the-dark bead for radiation treatment. It's not uncommon for children to amass 10, 20 -- even 35 -- feet of beads. It helps young patients track and celebrate their progress, but it also gives them a way to get through upcoming procedures.
Today the nonprofit organization supports children in more than 150 hospitals in the United States and four overseas countries. It is funded exclusively by private donations. Local hospitals that participate in The Beads of Courage program include Johns Hopkins, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Ai DuPont.
