THE GREAT SALISBURY CLEANUP-Saturday, April 13, 2013

It's not too late to get in on the action.  The GREAT SALISBURY CLEANUP is this Saturday, April 13, 2013, from 9 a.m. to noon. Individuals can still participate and/or your help by forming a team of friends to volunteer to work together for 3 hours cleaning up.  We'd love your help to eliminate litter from our community.  We have ESBLN taking care of the Zoo, Boy Scouts handling the City Park, Salisbury Youth Advisory Council cleaning up Lake Street, and Girl on Top of the World helping in the Church Street area.  These are just some of the folks helping to clean up our City.  If you want to help, let us know ahead of time so that we can be prepared or if it is last minute, report to 200 Naylor Street ready to join a team.  For more information call 410-749-0144.

31st Annual Salisbury Festival

The 31st Annual Salisbury Festival is right around the corner on April 26-28, 2013! There will be something for everyone with live entertainment, local artisans, shopping, carnival rides and games, children's activities, delicious food, car show, flea market, farmer's market, and so much more!

Allied Health Careers Open House

The continuing education division at Wor-Wic Community College is offering a free allied health careers open house on Thursday, April 11, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., in Room 105 of Henson Hall at the college campus on the corner of Route 50 and Walston Switch Road in Salisbury.

 

Information about Wor-Wic's allied health courses and allied health occupations such as certified nursing, dental and medical office assisting will be presented. Other allied health occupations to be covered include diagnostic (ICD-10) and procedural (CPT) coding, personal trainer, and pharmacy, phlebotomy and EKG technicians. Registration information, attendance requirements and prerequisites will also be provided.

 

A question and answer session and tours of the certified nursing assistant laboratories will follow the presentation.

FREE Diabetes Info Session at PRMC

Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) and its Diabetes Education Program invite anyone interested in learning more about living with diabetes to attend a free education event, "Living With Diabetes-Making It a Bit Easier," on Thursday, April 25, 2013.

            The program, to be held in the auditorium of the Avery W. Hall Educational Center on the PRMC campus, will feature an educational presentation and exhibits from companies involved in diabetes care and services.

Regina Kundell, CRNP, BC-ADM, of Peninsula Regional Endocrinology in Salisbury, and who has treated patients with diabetes for nearly a decade, will discuss how to live well while tackling the day to day challenges of diabetes. She has had Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus herself for over 35 years and is a long-time user of the insulin pump and other diabetes technology. A question and answer session will follow the presentation.

            The "Living With Diabetes-Making It a Bit Easier," program begins at 6:00 p.m. with vendor displays until 7:00 p.m. Ms. Kundell's presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. and last approximately one hour.

Hall Educational Center, located at the corner of Waverly Drive and Vine Street, in the parking lot directly across Vine Street or in the adjacent Garage B.  

"Global Habitat to India" - Chesapeake Housing Mission Presentation

The Rotary Club of Salisbury is pleased to welcome Don Taylor as its guest speaker at the service organization's April 11, 2013 meeting.

Taylor, a Senior Active Rotarian, also serves as the Executive Director of the Chesapeake Housing Mission (CHM), a local Christian Mission working to help those in poverty to repair their homes.  Taylor's presentation "Global Habitat to India" will details his recent mission to the Village of Bharatpur in north central India where he and a team of 20 CHM volunteers constructed three homes over a two week period.

In 2012, CHM completed 18 projects, and has plans to expand to 30 in 2013.  Taylor, a retired executive from Perdue Farms, has spent the past 23 years doing volunteer mission work locally and with the Appalachia Service Project.

Party for Parkinson's
EXIT Shore Realty & The Roop Group are teaming up with the Rotary Club of Salisbury Foundation in an effort to raise money for Parkinson's Disease (PD) awareness & support by hosting a "Casino Night Party". The goal for 2013 is to raise $15,000 for the Lower Shore Parkinson's Support Group to help fund their programs and activities. The casino night is April 19th from 7-11pm at The Fountains. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the doo. Evolution Revolution Ride

Evolution Brewery is hosting a 7 mile bike ride and family event on April 13th 2012. The event will be held at Evolution Brewery, 201 East Vine Street Salisbury, Maryland 21804. A bike swap will take place from 8 am - 11 am. Area vendors will be attending the event. Family games will be hosted and awards will be given for coolest bike, oldest bike ect. The bike ride will begin at 11:30 am and take place around the town of Salisbury. There will be an after party with live music at Evolution Brewry from 1 pm - 11 pm. Please register by March 10th. Computer Information Session

at Wor-Wic

The continuing education division at Wor-Wic Community College is offering a free computer information session on Wednesday, April 10, from 4 to 6:30 p.m., in Room 300 of the Workforce Development Center at the college campus on the corner of Route 50 and Walston Switch Road in Salisbury.

 

The session is designed to help prospective students determine what non-credit courses or sequence of courses would best meet their needs.

 

Continuing education administrators and instructors will be available to help those new to computers determine what courses to take first, as well as to help more advanced users determine how to upgrade their existing skills.

 

Information will also be provided about the continuing education certificates offered in computer and office technology essentials, computer graphics and desktop publishing, Microsoft Office business technology applications, PC technician basics and website design.

Bingomania

Bingomania, the Eastern Shore's largest bingo cash prize event, returns to the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center on Saturday, April 20th. Doors open at 5:00pm for early bird games and regular games begin at 7:30pm.

Admission to Bingomania includes all regular and special games, including the Jumbo Jackpot Game. Regular game payouts are $500 while special games will pay out $1000. The Jumbo Jackpot Game pays a maximum of $10,000 depending upon attendance.

Increase your chances of winning and help a local food bank at the same time by bringing three non-perishable food items to the game. Those that do will receive three additional cards for the first early bird game.

Upcoming Rock and Roll Jamboree Benefits MAC Inc.

Wicomico Nursing Home in Salisbury will play host to the "Rock and Roll Jamboree" on Saturday, May 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Admission to this fundraiser is free. Monies raised from bake sale and white elephant tables and other family-friendly activities will benefit local senior programs at MAC Inc., Area Agency on Aging.

DJ Austin Vestal will be playing tunes from the rock and roll era. Poodle skirts and bobby socks are welcome!

Wicomico Library Open House

You are invited to the Grand Opening of our NEW Language Lab!  We will hold a ribbon cutting at the new lab in the Main Library in downtown Salisbury on Tuesday, April 16th at 5:30 pm.    

The language learning computer lab will provide access to online language programs, citizenship education programs, basic skills programs and more.

 

Funding for the Language Lab comes from the American Library Association and Dollar General Foundation as part of the 2013 American Dream Starts @ Your Library national grant program.

Party for Parkinson's 

April is National Parkinson's Awareness Month. PD 101 - Parkinson's Disease Seminar

Learn about Parkinson's disease during National Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month. With an estimated 7,000 cases on lower Delmarva, and up to 1.5 million cases in the United States, PD is second only to Alzheimer's in prevalence among neurodegenerative diseases. There is no cure; but there is help.

The Lower Shore Parkinson's Support Group is co-sponsoring a seminar entitled PD 101, to be presented by the Johns Hopkins Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center on Monday, April 29th, 10 am to 4 pm. Peninsula Regional Medical Center, also a co-sponsor, will host the event in the Hallowell Conference Center. The third co-sponsor, the Caregivers Resource Center at MAC, Inc., is handling the registration process and may be reached at (410)742-0505 Ext. 115. The cost is only $10 and includes lunch.
