PRMC Health Care Reform Conference

When Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City announced the ban on super-sized sodas sales, his decision created a media uproar. Advocates of individual liberty invoked fears of a "nanny state where government officials would invade personal freedoms." Mayor Bloomberg's defenders pointed to the epidemic of obesity and the long tradition of governmental responsibility for public health. Add into this mix the impact of the new Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and you have the ingredients for this year's Peninsula Regional Medical Center's Patient Care Advisory Committee's 8th annual ethics conference. The conference, "Health Care Reform: Nanny State or Responsible Stewardship?" will be held on Thursday, April 4 in Hallowell Conference Center at Peninsula Regional Medical Center from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. The main speaker for this year's conference is Dr. James Childress, Hollingsworth Professor of Ethics at the University of Virginia and co-author of the groundbreaking book, Principles of Biomedical Ethics, just out in its 7th Edition. Also speaking is Dr. Karen Matsuoka of Maryland's Department of Mental Health and Hygiene, a graduate of Oxford University who has vast experience in healthcare implementation from federal legislation to evidence-based practice. The cost to attend the conference is $50.00 for physicians, healthcare professions and the general public, $40.00 for PRMC and Salisbury University employees and $20.00 for full time students and chaplains/clergy. Conference support also comes from the Salisbury Medical Science Foundation and Salisbury University's Henson School of Science and Technology and Fulton School of Liberal Arts.
A dinner will be provided. Registration is required by Thursday, March 28th. For information or to register, please call PRMC's Debora Musser in the Pastoral Care office, 410-543-7157, or email her at
debora.musser@peninsula.org.

UMES Dinner Theatre - April 12 & 13

University of Maryland Eastern Shore's drama director is set to stage one last play-as a full-time professor and director, that is-before retiring after 38 years.  The play by Vernel Bagneris slated for UMES' annual Dinner Theater is appropriately named, "One Mo' Time". April 12 and 13 the university's drama society, under Dameron-Johnson's tutelage, takes to the stage in the Richard A. Henson Center for the Dinner Theater production.  The musical, she said, is set in New Orleans in the 1920's and is "presented in lively vaudeville and burlesque styles." The menu fits the setting.  UMES' Dining Services will treat audience members to a Soul Food buffet, which it is known for regionally.  Dinner seating starts at 6 p.m., with curtain time at 8 p.m.  Tickets are $45 for Friday night and $50 for Saturday night.  Call 410-651-6230 for tickets or for more information.
