Healthcare Reform Lunch & Learn
The Young Professionals of SACC are hosting a Lunch & Learn on Healthcare Reform on January 29 at Noon at the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce. The cost of lunch is $10. At this lunch and learn presented by Chris Maas of Manpower, attendees will take a look at some of the signficiant changes coming up in the very near future from both a business and personal perspective. Some of the topics that will be discussed will be Coverage for Uninsured, Employer Requirement's, Individual Mandates, Medicaid Expansion, Exchanges, "Pay or Play", and the Excise Tax.

Need help with your taxes but can't afford to pay for it? SHORE UP! Inc. is a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site and offers free tax-preparation and e-filing for families making under $50,000/yr. Taxes are done by appointment, Jan. 23 - April 11, 2012, at no charge. Appointments are available at our two convenient locations in Wicomico and Somerset County. Wicomico Public Library seeking Nominations for Light of Literacy Award

The Friends of Wicomico Public Library are seeking nominations for the Light of Literacy Awards.

Nominees help others improve their reading and literacy skills, giving them a necessary tool to become lifelong learners.

 

Winners will be honored at an awards breakfast:

Thursday, April 11, 2013 8 - 10 a.m. at The Fountains in Salisbury

 

7 Awards will be presented:

Youth Volunteer (someone up to age 18)

Adult Volunteer (someone over 18)

Business (for-profit organization)

Organization (non-profit organization)

Educator (an individual who works in the education profession with students from birth to 12th grade)

Higher Education (an individual who works, teaches or attends formal, post-high school instruction)

Local Author (someone living in or born in the Lower Eastern Shore area who is published)

Genesis World Mission International Director Tracy Ritter to speak at Rotary Club Meeting

The Rotary Club of Salisbury is pleased to welcome Tracy Ritter as its guest speaker at the service organization's January 17, 2013 meeting.

Ritter, a Rotarian of the Salisbury Sunrise Club, is also a registered nurse with a Masters degree in Public Health who has been working within the humanitarian aid arena for over 15 years. She has served in various positions with several non-profits in the Delmarva area, as well as in Boise, Idaho.

Since 2005, she has been the International Director of Genesis World Mission-an organization that leads and coordinates sustainable human health services through local and international partnerships in under-served countries. Ritter has led the international department of Genesis to focus their current efforts off the coast of Kenya, empowering the local Kenyan communities and building networks to bring health care, clean water and proper sanitation to communities in need.  

The Rotary Club of Salisbury meets every Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the Rotary Scout and Community Center on Riverside Drive in Salisbury. Bingomania

Bingomania, the Eastern Shore's largest bingo cash prize event, returns to the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center on Saturday, February 9th. Doors open at 5:00pm for early bird games and regular games begin at 7:30pm.

Admission to Bingomania includes all regular and special games, including the Jumbo Jackpot Game. Regular game payouts are $500 while special games will pay out $1000. The Jumbo Jackpot Game pays a maximum of $10,000 depending upon attendance.

Increase your chances of winning and help a local food bank at the same time by bringing three non-perishable food items to the game. Those that do will receive three additional cards for the first early bird game.

The Ultimate Wine Dinner is back at Market Street Inn for its 4th year and will showcase the Hess Wine Collection with each amazing dinner course paired with the perfect palate pleaser. MAC - Chronic Pain Self-Management Program

MAC Inc., Area Agency on Aging, is offering the Chronic Pain Self-Management Program beginning in February. This workshop was developed by Dr. Sandra LaFort at McGill University in Montreal and later in conjunction with Dr. Kate Lorig of Stanford University Patient Education Research Center.

 

If you have chronic pain that lasts for more than 3-6 months, varies in intensity, affects one or more areas and creates stress in your life, this workshop will benefit you.  The workshop is facilitated by two master trainers, both of whom live with chronic pain. Those who successfully complete the program have more vitality, less pain, less dependence on others, improved mental health and are more involved in everyday activities.

 

This is a 6 week workshop that will begin Thursday, February 14 at MAC Inc. 909 Progress Circle in Salisbury, from 1-3:30PM. There is no charge for the workshop, unless you wish to purchase the workbook or Exercise CD.

Lone Star Rodeo Company's Bulls, Broncs & Barrels Tour

Celebrate an American tradition this winter as the Lone Star Rodeo Company brings its Bulls, Broncs & Barrels Tour to the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center Friday, January 25 and Saturday, January 26. The competition begins at 7:30pm each night.

This genuine rodeo event offers an exciting line-up for the whole family including Bareback Bronc Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Brahma Bull Riding and Cowgirl's Barrel Racing. Along for the ride will be Jessica Blair, a trick and roman rider who has performed at Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede and other equine events all across America. Children under ten are invited down to the arena floor to take part in pre-show events and meet genuine cowboys and girls.

Tickets for the Bulls, Broncs & Barrels Tour are on sale now. As a special offer from Cheerwine, advanced general admission tickets are only $10. World Gym Health Fair
World Gym Salisbury, in partnership with Coastal Fury CrossFit, will host its annual health fair and community open house on Saturday, Jan. 19, from 7:30-11:30 a.m. More than 30 vendors will be on site to provide basic health services and information to all those in attendance. The club will also conduct tours throughout the day to those who are interested in joining a full-service fitness center that offers a vast array of services in a clean and friendly environment.

 

The health fair, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 800 S. Salisbury Blvd. Local health and wellness experts will educate guests on a variety of topics: from postural assessments and proper footwear to acupuncture and hypnotherapy. Learn about cleaning up your bad eating habits and ways to supplement your daily nutrition needs.

 

In the fitness arena, learn how CrossFit can challenge your body in a whole new format, cut a few strokes from your game of golf and learn the basics of stand-up paddleboarding.

 

Free screenings will also be offered: bone density, full body compositions, glucose/cholesterol, blood pressure and body mass index.

 

Meet our team of personal trainers and group fitness instructors, who will work with you to develop a fitness plan tailored specifically to your needs.
