Town Hall Meeting With Congressman Andy Harris

Congressman Andy Harris (R Md. 1) will be holding a Town Hall meeting on Monday, October 29 from 5:00pm to 6:00pm at the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce at 144 East Main St. in Salisbury. With the elections on the horizon, this is a great opportunity for the business community to come out meet with their congressman, ask questions, express your concerns, and to have your voice heard. Oyster Replenishment Speaker at Green Team Meeting

Survival for Caregivers - Nov. 2

Caregiving for an elderly parent or an ailing loved one can be overwhelming, fraught with fatigue, friction, guilt and emotional and physical stress. Learn how to cope with the stress of caregiving at a free seminar, "Survival for Caregivers" on Friday, November 2, at Wor-Wic Community College's Guerrieri Auditorium from 9 am to 12:30 pm. Speakers include Dr. Barry Jacobs, director of behavioral sciences for the Crozer-Keystone Family Medical Residency Program in Springfield, PA; Peggy Bradford, executive director of MAC Incorporated, the Area Agency on Aging; and Brent Brady, bereavement service manager for Coastal Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. This event is sponsored by Coastal Hospice and Palliative Care, MAC Inc., Your Area Agency on Aging; and the 50+ Network for Creative Engagement. Admission is free and the public is invited. "Plan Your College/Career Pathway to Success" Night

Wicomico, Worcester and Somerset County Schools are collaborating to host a Tri-County "Plan Your College/Career Pathway to Success" night at WOR-WIC Community College.  It will be held on November 15, 2012 in the Workforce Development Center, Room 101 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM  The event is open to students and families in the Tri-County area.  Participants will be able to meet with and obtain information from local colleges such as WOR- WIC Community College, Salisbury University, and University of Maryland Eastern Shore.  We will also have military recruiters, local employers, apprenticeship programs and staff from the One Stop Job Market for Workforce Development opportunities. Thursday, November 8th at 11:30 am, the Friends of Poplar Hill Mansion present a First Ladies Luncheon. Spanish for Healthcare Professionals

Registration is now open for a one-day class, "Spanish for Healthcare Professionals," Nov. 1, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore's Foreign Language Instructional Center.The class provides practical vocabulary and cultural understanding to persons working in the medical field; no prior knowledge of Spanish is required.  It is taught by a native-speaking instructor in a state-of-the-art language learning classroom. Wanted: Volunteer Community Mentors!

Big Brothers Big Sisters is the nation's premiere donor and volunteer-supported youth mentoring organization. We pair volunteer mentors with a children in the community that need extra positive attention.   We are currently in need of volunteers, especially males, to serve as mentors. All it takes is 2 or more visits per month for one year to make an impact, however, many times our mentoring matches stay together for much longer and stay in touch for a lifetime! Volunteering is fun, BIG time.  Being a Big Brother or Big Sisters is one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling things you will ever do. Early Voting Scheduled at the Wicomico Civic Center

Salisbury, MD - The Wicomico Youth & Civic Center will serve as an Early Voting location for the upcoming election.  Early voting is scheduled from October 27th until November 1st in the DaNang Room. Early voting is available to all Wicomico County residents that are registered to vote, regardless of their designated polling place.

 

Voters can take advantage of early voting on the following days:

October 27th - 10am-8pm

October 28th - 12pm-6pm

October 29th - 10am-8pm

October 30th - 10am-8pm

October 31st - 10am-8pm

November 1st - 10am-8pm

Halloween Social & Zombie Run

Get ready to run for your life! Wicomico Recreation and Salisbury University's 'Be The Match' will host a charity Zombie Run on Saturday, October 27 at 5:00pm at Cedar Hill Park in Bivalve, MD. Runners be warned - the two-mile course through the woods may be more treacherous than it appears. Participants will have to dodge zombie attacks and cross the finish line with their flag intact to survive, all others will be considered dead on arrival.

The registration fee for the Zombie Run is $25 per person, $20 for Salisbury University students. Registration fee includes a tee shirt and admission to the Adult Halloween Social immediately following the Zombie Run. Register now at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center Box Office, 500 Glen Avenue, Salisbury, MD 21804 or online at www.WicomicoRecandParks.org.

Running (or zombies) not your thing? Celebrate at the Adult Halloween Social following the Zombie Run at 6:00pm. The social will feature live entertainment, hay ride, haunted trail, bonfire, costume contest and other "grown-up" Halloween games. Food and beer will also be available for purchase. Tickets for the Adult Halloween Social are $10 and may be purchased at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center Box Office, online at www.WicomicoRecandParks.org or at the event.

The Zombie Run and Adult Halloween Social are open to adults ages 18 & up. Proceeds will benefit 'Be The Match,' a non-profit organization which helps patients receive life-saving bone marrow and cord blood transplants, and the Westside Community Center in Bivalve. Wicomico County 2010 and 2012 Early Voting numbers and Dates for the General Election Early Voting

2012 Primary Election April 3, 2012:    

Total turnout      9,340    EV turnout         1,350    14.5%

State Board of Elections expects an 80% turnout for this November 6 General Election.

This could reduce the number of voters waiting in line to get through the polling places on Nov 6 by around 10,500 fewer people.

 

Early Voting is Saturday, October 27 to Thursday, November 1 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (except on Sunday noon to 6 p.m.) in the Wicomico County Youth & Civic Center, DaNang Room, 500 Glenn Avenue, Salisbury 21804.

Eastern Shore Classic Dog Show

The Talbot County Kennel Club, the Salisbury Maryland Kennel Club and the Mispillion Kennel Club have joined forces to bring the Eastern Shore Classic Dog Show to Delmarva.  This dog-centric event, spans five days and offers a different event each day.  The show will run November 7th-11th at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center in Salisbury, Maryland. The Eastern Shore Classic begins daily at 8:30am and lasts until 4:30pm each day. There will be a Best in Show Award daily. On Friday evening, November 9, there will also be a Sanctioned B Match brought to you by the Salisbury Maryland Kennel Club, Inc. This match will begin 30 minutes after Best in Show Judging and will feature puppies in classes ages 4-6 months, 6-9 months, 9-12 months as well as an adult class.

Tickets for one day of the event are $5.00 for adults, $1.00 for students and children under 5 are free. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door each day. For more information, visit www.easternshoreclassic.com.

Eastern Shore Walk to End Alzheimer's

The Alzheimer's Association invites the community to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Eastern Shore Walk to End Alzheimer's, Saturday, Oct. 27 (rain or shine), at the Salisbury/Wicomico Senior Center - 909 Progress Circle, Salisbury, MD 21804). Participants can choose to walk along a three-mile path or a one-mile path. Registration starts at 9 a.m., when participants can enjoy light refreshments live music, and entertainment for the whole family, including a children's play area and face painting.Participants are encouraged to register early as teams or individually. Admission is free, but those who raise at least $100 will receive a Walk to End Alzheimer's T-shirt. Fall Fest Silent Auction for Delmarva Education Foundation

Come to St. Alban's Episcopal Church for the 3rd annual Fall Fest Silent Auction on Saturday, Nov. 3. The church will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Delmarva Education Foundation. The auction is from 5 to 8 p.m. and the church is located at 302 St. Alban's Drive in Salisbury (near the old mall). There will be free hors d'oeuvres and entertainment.

Holly Community Basket Bingo

From September 12 to October 25, 2012, the 19th Annual Tanger PinkSTYLE campaign will take place at the Tanger Outlet Center in Ocean City. As part of Tanger's fundraising efforts, shoppers will be able to purchase Pink Cards for a $1 donation each. Each Pink Card provides shoppers with a 25 percent discount on a single item at participating stores located at Tanger Outlets in Ocean City.  Proceeds from Pink Card sales will be donated to the Eunice Q. Sorin Women's Diagnostic Center at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, Md., and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Pink Cards will be available for purchase at the Eunice Q. Sorin Women's Diagnostic Center, area businesses, select community events and at the Tanger Outlets in Ocean City. The Eastern Shore's largest bingo cash prize event, returns to the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center on Saturday, November 3rd.
