UVM students tag Burlington's ash trees to raise awareness about EAB
By Caitlin Cuscak,Vermont Forest Pest First Detector Coordinator
Can you tell your ash from your maple? If you answered yes, then you're in the minority. It turns out most people cannot identify an ash tree and therefore have no idea what sort of impact an invasive exotic insect such as the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) will have until it's too late. So on September 18th, UVM students with the Community-Based Natural Resource Management class took to the streets to flag and tag some of Burlington's ash trees in order to raise awareness about the benefits these trees provide and the threat of EAB. A Sneak Peek at VTUCF's New Website
We've been working hard this year to redesign our website to better serve and highlight our Vermont community of urban & community forest stewards! Features include local stories, a new blog, events listings, a customizable tree selection guide, searchable resources, and a map of what's going on in communities statewide. We hope to be live by the time the snow flies. Stay Tuned!

Interns Bring Initiatives New Life
VTUCF Hires Three Fall Interns
Thanks to funding from the USDA Forest Service, VTUCF will be able to support interns to work on six initiatives this year. This fall, we've hired three stellar individuals:

Sam Gersie, Big Tree Intern
Sam is a senior environmental science major at UVM, where he also studies forestry and geo-spatial technologies. Originally from New Jersey, Sam fell in love with the Vermont landscape during his first year at UVM.  He has held other internships both in Vermont and at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in NH.  This semester, he will be revitalizing the Vermont Big Trees Program, digitizing historical documents, re-measuring some of the largest trees in the state and helping to promote the program.

Nicole Peruso, Energy-Saving Trees Intern
Nicole graduated from UVM in May 2013 with a degree in environmental studies. She is interested in sustainability education, curriculum development, and place-based and service-learning educational pedagogy, and has been involved with projects at Charlotte Central School, Rock Point School, and Tuttle Middle School. Working with VELCO, Nicole will be developing curricular materials and a program to promote and educate on the energy-saving benefits of trees to K-12 schools statewide.

Amie Schiller, Village Greens Intern
Amie is a UVM junior, majoring in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology and minoring in Geospatial Technology. As a native Vermonter, she has grown up with a profound love and appreciation for the beautiful landscape we live in every day. This semester, Amie will be coordinating a new Village Greens Initiative focused on understanding and documenting the cultural, historical, and economic importance of these community spaces throughout Vermont.

NEW RESOURCES

The Vermont Green Infrastructure Initiative just released a series of info sheets as a primer to using green stormwater infrastructure practices. The concept - keep water onsite by taking natures lead instead of piping it away or letting it runoff. Yup - TREES are part of the solution!

FEATURE TREES

Instead of picking one tree, we picked a few for their fabulous fall  color.

ORANGE: Aesculus glabra, Ohio Buckeye

PARK(ing) DAY

The Montpelier Tree Board took part in the City's PARK(ing) Day  on September 20. This is an annual worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks. Five parklets were installed and the tree board took the opportunity to share their work, educate the others, and recruit more tree stewards.
