A Message from the President

Karen Holly

Dear Impact 100 Greater Indianapolis Members and Friends,

As we enter the time of year generally thought of as the season of giving, I am asking you to consider Impact 100. Impact 100 membership is the gift that keeps giving. While we ask you annually to recommit to our organization, it is the eleven projects that Impact 100 has funded that have developed and affect not only the clients of the winning organizations but also the community and members of Impact 100. It is my hope that we can give away two grants in June - our 10th anniversary - to continue the impact in our community. We are making progress, as you can see from the chart below, showing our current member count for 2015. But Impact 100 can only reach our ambitious goal with more members and generous donations from women like you. Beth Thomas, the incoming President and Membership chair, spoke last month about the simple adage of Each One Bring One. We believe that seeing what our past recipients are accomplishing not only encourages potential members to join but also reminds current and former Impact members how this funding can touch and improve lives in our community. Please consider helping Impact reach its goal by signing up here to become a member in 2015, as well as encouraging at least one friend to join our organization, too.

Following the Impact at Craine House

By Beth Thomas

More than 20 women visited Craine House on November 13 for an Impact 100 Follow the Impact event. These events give us the opportunity to see first-hand the impact our grants have made.

Craine House is a court-ordered work release facility providing a secure and structured environment in which women serve their sentences for non-violent felonies. Preschool children may live with their mothers. Craine offers educational opportunities, help for substance abuse, and anger management support. They save tax payers nearly one million dollars a year in incarceration and child protective services costs.

Craine was granted $102,500 in 2007 to fund a pilot program addressing the root cause of substance abuse to be implemented by Craine House in a partnership with Fairbanks Hospital. This was a transformational grant, with the pilot program growing into a permanent offering at Craine House and Craine hiring full-time the Fairbanks counselor responsible for the program's creation. Suzy Pierce, the Craine House CEO, also told the women present that receiving the Impact 100 grant paved the way for them to receive additional grant money because other grantors consider the Impact 100 granting process to be very thorough (this is something we hear from all our grantees).

You can learn more about Craine House and their current programs at:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0Pzn7LrcCA

Impact 100 requested Craine House provide a list of items on their Wish List so that members could bring donations to the event, and several women did just that. Craine House would welcome the contribution of items such as diapers, bus passes, or hand sanitizer. You can see a complete list of needs here.
Outside the Box Wins Makeover Contest
by Donna Oklak

Outside the Box is the winner of the $25,000 Design for a Difference 2014 charity give away and was showcased on Channel 13 and HGTV in November. Leading the project was Outside the Box (OTB) board member and former Impact 100 president Barb Fleming. This design makeover renovated areas that were not upgraded in 2011 when OTB won Impact 100's $100,000 grant. OTB serves adults with disabilities by providing custom-created services based on individual needs.

The "reveal" of the new facilities was November 12. Barb would like to credit Blakley's for donating and installing all flooring and carpet. Other vendors donating materials are Ted Geers of YB Normal Custom Woodworking, Delta Faucet, and Bob Koehne of Kentwood Office Furniture. The makeover included paint, flooring, custom built-in-cabinetry, sinks and cabinets, furniture, sound panels, lighting, window treatments and a few decorative touches.

The scope of the project included two corridors and three group rooms for the participants of Hummingbirds, Rainmakers and Grasshoppers. As the participant names suggest, the needs of each group room are individual and specific. Group leaders and the participants provided critical information that impacted the design of each group room.

More importantly, the products and materials used in this makeover will become the standard for OTB as there are more than 14 more areas and leftover furniture from the remnants of a nursing home to be upgraded to a fully functional and maintainable space designed to meet specific needs of OTB clients.
