A Message from the President

Dear Impact 100 Greater Indianapolis Members and Friends,

Karen Kennelly
Karen Kennelly, President
Impact 100 Greater Indianapolis

Thank you to all of our new and returning members, making up the $121,000 we will award to five greater Indianapolis nonprofit organizations - one of which will be awarded $100,000 of those funds towards their transformational project! We anxiously await the big announcement in June. Here is Impact 100 Greater Indianapolis by the numbers for 2013:

  • Total funds to be awarded: $121,000
  • Major grant award amount: $100,000 (awarded to the finalist receiving the most votes at the annual dinner)
  • Residual grant award amount: $5,250 (four of the finalists will receive an unrestricted grant in this amount)
  • Number of actual members (this includes syndicate members individually): 144
  • Number of syndicates: 14 (consisting of 37 members)
  • Number of brand new members: 29
  • Number of members participating in a Focus Area Committee: 57
  • Number of LOIs received from greater Indianapolis nonprofit organizations: 53

Thank you to all of you for participating in whatever way is most meaningful to you. Some time in March, you will receive a survey asking for feedback regarding your membership experience and our processes. I encourage you to participate in that survey so that we can continue to improve upon making this the most meaningful experience for both members and grantees!

Finalist Feature:  Outside the Box Is Chosen as a Finalist in a National Contest!

The Huffington Post has chosen Outside the Box as a finalist in their JobRaising Competition!  The contest highlights how organizations are helping to solve the job crisis. The organization that raises the most money wins $150,000.

Outside the Box's E-3 Campaign is helping to Educate, Employ, and Empower developmentally disabled people of Indiana. You can help OTB win the contest by donating to their fundraising page on CrowdRise. Even if they don't win the contest, they will still appreciate your donation! Please also pass the word along to your friends. The contest runs until March 1st.

Member Feature: Impact 100 "Shadows" Form Their Own Shared Membership

Last year, past Impact board president Barb Fleming Cecil hosted three "shadows" during the grant review process. A shadow is a person who is invited to sit in on our committee process under the mentorship of a member. The three shadows--Amy

Laura Carroll and Linda Rolfsen reviewing education committee proposals

Stempkowski, Laura Carroll and Linda Rolfsen--learned how to read grant proposals, join in discussions, and participate in site visits under Barb's guidance. They took part in the health and wellness FAC and proudly selected Dove House to be their finalist last year.

In 2013, two of the three shadow members--Laura Carroll and Linda Rolfsen--have created their own syndicate membership and are participating in the education committee. Linda says her favorite part of committee work is discussion after the LOIs are submitted. Laura, who is Barb's daughter, enjoys the site visit component. "I love hearing the different views," says Linda, who admits it is enlightening to have her view swayed. Both Linda and Laura have been friends for over 10 years and enjoy doing things together.

"I am so pleased they went on to form their own group," says Barb. "I enjoyed having them shadow me and it was a great way to expose them to Indy's nonprofit community. Barb shares that the three shadow students became attached to their health and wellness finalist and helped when Impact 100 worked to tear down Dove House's garage.

Any member can invite someone to shadow them. Just be sure to coordinate with your FAC chair.
