Keeping Your Head When Everyone Else is Losing Theirs
There's an old saying..."If you can keep your head when everyone else is losing theirs, then you don't know what is going on". That probably is true for the unsaved person. But for a Christian it should read..."If you are keeping your head when everyone else is losing theirs, then you must know Jesus!" - like when Jesus slept in the boat while the disciples were terrorized and decided they were drowning.
(Mark 4:35-41)

I know firsthand how easy it is to succumb to the temptation of losing your spiritual focus when you encounter life-threatening trials, whether it's the trial of being on the freeway driving to work :) or diagnosed with a serious disease. Fearful thoughts and emotions engulf you. Dark visions of gloom and doom appear like ghosts, then disappear only to be replaced with scarier ones. Survival mode kicks in. Your mind swirls with a tornado of confusion as you try to decide what is the right "Christian response" to this evil war that has been declared on you.

You start interrogating yourself... "I've preached over 5,000 messages in my life. Which one fits here? What would I tell someone else in this position? What do I need to do to get the Lord to act on my behalf? Maybe I need to forgive someone. But who?? What sins have I not repented of? Maybe I should put on worship music. Yes, that's it. No wait, I'll listen to sermons on divine healing. No, I should read the Bible for myself. Maybe I should write down all the healing scriptures. But I know all the healing scriptures. I need someone to pray for me. No, I need a lot of people to pray for me. But why? If I believe I'm healed, then why should they pray?? No, I should pray and confess for myself. Arghhhhh! I think I'll watch ESPN."

On and on it goes. At this stage you feel like you have been sent to diffuse a powerful bomb ticking down to detonation, and the only thing you know is that there is a red wire and green wire and you have a pair of wire clippers.

The first thing is to realize that all of that mental and emotional whirlwind described above is us trying to fix it in our own ability. That is the "works" mentality that tries to earn God's favor. If that will work, then why did Jesus die for us? We could just earn from God everything we need. But we could also brag that we did it ourselves. That is contrary to the entire plan of salvation...

But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. (Galatians 6:14)

Everything that needs or needed to be done for us has already been done through the work Jesus accomplished by His death and resurrection. If something has already been done, what's there left to do? Nothing. And that's what we do...Nothing!

We take a deep breath and exhale slowly. Then we chill. We rest in the finished work of the Cross. In quietness and confidence we simply BELIEVE. And if we believe, then we will act and speak accordingly. If Jesus speaks, we obey, but we never again try to "get God to do something". Jesus' work was enough. We are human "beings" not human "doings". The condition of our heart is the deciding factor before God, not our religious works.

Oh yeah...Concerning which wire to clip...Just stay away from the bomb.

Thank you for helping us change lives
with the truth of the Word of God!
