Is Being a Prisoner Good Enough for You?

"Why did you take us here to starve? We don't have water to drink. Would you speak to us instead of God, please? He scares us. We used to have meat to eat, and fish was free in Egypt. We had great cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. We're sick of this manna. If only we had died in Egypt or had died in the desert. Why did God bring us here to die at the sword, with our wives and young children taken captive. It would be better to go back to Egypt. Will we ever stop perishing? Why then have you brought the Lord's assembly into this wilderness, for us and our beasts to die here?  Why have you made us come to this wretched place? It is not a place of grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, nor is there water to drink. We loathe this miserable food."

Complain, complain, complain.

The verses above are just a few, from only one book, (Numbers) describing just some of the complaints of ungrateful people who were following Moses in the wilderness. (Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) They had been prisoners in Egypt, but they cried out to God, and He sent Moses to take them to the land flowing with milk and honey that God had promised them. But it seems that the people did not like how God was doing things. Imagine that! The first time they had to trust Him, they complained. And the 2nd, 3rd, 4th........∞

They said they would rather be slaves back in Egypt where they had been brutally treated and pushed beyond their physical limitations, rather than be uncomfortable for a short time while God prepared a wonderful life for them. And things still have not changed even today. People still fight God changing anything, even when they are slaves to sin, sickness, and every kind of bondage.

For example, Jesus came with deliverance, healing, forgiveness, provision, and a miraculous lifestyle, but His teaching held them accountable. So the people said, "No, the old wine is good enough". (Luke 5:39) They would rather be sick and sinful than have to change!

That's like saying, "I want more room in my house, but I refuse to tear down walls in order to remodel". So you sit cramped in your tiny space and complain. The same is true when the order of worship or anything else is changed in church. In the 1970's when we quit singing out of the Hymn Book, the Old Wine'rs (Whiners)  said, "Blasphemy"!

But the Holy Spirit was doing something new.

Today, whining babyworship is changing again, the Spirit wants to break off religious bondage, and you can guess what is happening. Cries are coming forth of, "The old wine is good enough!" I wonder if people want to be "sung to" (entertained?) by the worship band, instead of "led in worship of the living Lord and Savior".

Well, the old wine is NOT good enough for me! It's not for you either. And it's not good enough for Jesus and the Holy Spirit! Let the "religious" be embalmed with tradition if they must. But as for us, let us keep following the Holy Spirit up the mountain until we see the Lord face to face. Whatever is happening is not "good enough", until that goal is accomplished! Let us fix our eyes on Jesus and worship, not complain.
