Dear Ohav friends,
We were all saddened and horrified by the violence in Newtown, CT, and other recent gun murders of innocent citizens in our country. Places of worship across the nation are asked to participate in the National Gun Violence Prevention Sabbath Weekend, March 15-17. In observance of this event, our Torah study on Shabbat morning March 16, will focus on Jewish texts that can help frame how we think about issues of Gun Control and Gun Violence, as well as offer insight into relevant Jewish values. Please join us for this important discussion.
gunssabbath
Sponsors of the Gun Violence Prevention Sabbath are the Washington National
Cathedral; PICO, a national network of faith-based community organizations working to create innovative solutions to problems, such as access to health care, improving public schools, making neighborhoods safer, building affordable housing, redeveloping communities and revitalizing democracy; and Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence, a coalition of nearly 50 denominations and faith-based organizations (including United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and the Rabbinical Assembly).

All are encouraged during this week's special initiative to contact
Congress as part of a Faith in Action initiative. Use the link below to
send a message to our legislators urging them to confront the issue of gun violence through legislation, and expressing your concerns regarding items such as criminal background checks for gun sales, military-style assault weapons and gun trafficking.

Project Nehemiah

For many years, some generous Ohav Shalom members have been participating quietly in a fund raising effort for the synagogue called Project Nehemiah.  This program was named for the religious leader who, in the 5th century B.C.E, rebuilt the moral, spiritual and physical infrastructure of the Jewish community in the land of Israel.

Project Nehemiah is a voluntary program of giving beyond standard annual congregational dues.  Since annual dues account for less than 50% of the funds necessary to sustain our synagogue on an annual basis, Project Nehemiah is a way to bridge that gap and ensure that the programs and services we count on continue to be available and of the highest quality.

Three levels of one-year pledges are available:

Supporting member:   $500 above dues

Sustaining member:    $750 above dues

Guardian member:      $1,000 above dues

Project Nehemiah is one way to assist in building the moral, spiritual and physical infrastructure of Congregation Ohav Shalom.  If you are interested, please contact President Libby Post at lpost@commservices.net or by phone at 857-6788.
