Five Great Jewish Prayers That Can Change Your Life.

Still time to join the class!!

Too many people avoid praying or praying from the Siddur (Jewish prayer book) because they feel alienated from its ancient ideas, language, and use of Hebrew.  However, our prayers are great poems that have lasted for thousands of years because they have important, inspirational messages that transcend time and place.  In this class with Rabbi Ornstein we will study and decode five of the most important Jewish prayers of our tradition for what they say, what they mean, and what can mean to us.

Though knowing some Hebrew is helpful for this course, no formal skill in reading or understanding Hebrew or knowledge of prayers are necessary for you to join this class.

All classes meet on Mondays:  1/21, 1/28, 2/4, 2/11, 2/18, 2/25. Please note the change of dates for the first and last sessions.

ALL ARE WELCOME.

Who Wrote the Hebrew Bible?

Still time to join the class!!

(Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Documentary Hypothesis)  With Steven Stark-Riemer

Traditionally, the Hebrew Bible has been understood to be the word of God. But even traditionalists have acknowledged certain passages' inconsistencies and repetition. In this lively discussion course, we will consider both what traditional interpreters have said and what scholars and archaeologists have discovered.  We will discuss when and why certain books were written and edited and what may have been the historical, theological, political and social contexts in which this occurred. The Documentary Hypothesis considers the Hebrew Bible to be the product of a deft weaving of multiple and identifiable sources. We will weigh the arguments for and against the Hypothesis as well as how the Hebrew Bible may be more than the sum of its parts

Wednesdays, January 23 and 30; February 6,13 and 27; March 6, 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. in the Library

You can still sign up, please email the Ohav office at nancy@ohavshalom.com, or call 489-4706, ext. 10.

Scholar-in-Residence Weekend
Our featured speaker will be Dr. Ron Wolfson, nationally known expert on Jewish family life, synagogue transformation and Jewish practice. He is widely renowned as one of the finest teachers in contemporary Jewish life. Co-sponsored by Temple Israel and the Jewish Federation of NENY.

Project Nehemiah

For many years, some generous Ohav Shalom members have been participating quietly in a fund raising effort for the synagogue called Project Nehemiah.  This program was named for the religious leader who, in the 5th century B.C.E, rebuilt the moral, spiritual and physical infrastructure of the Jewish community in the land of Israel.

Project Nehemiah is a voluntary program of giving beyond standard annual congregational dues.  Since annual dues account for less than 50% of the funds necessary to sustain our synagogue on an annual basis, Project Nehemiah is a way to bridge that gap and ensure that the programs and services we count on continue to be available and of the highest quality.

Three levels of one-year pledges are available:

Supporting member:   $500 above dues

Sustaining member:    $750 above dues

Guardian member:      $1,000 above dues

Project Nehemiah is one way to assist in building the moral, spiritual and physical infrastructure of Congregation Ohav Shalom.  If you are interested, please contact President Libby Post at lpost@commservices.net or by phone at 857-6788.
