Volunteers Needed for Sea Turtle Washback Program
St. Johns County is in the midst 2015 Washback Turtle Season. Volunteers survey the wrack line (the row of seaweed that has been pushed onto the beach by the tide or a storm) for stranded post-hatchling sea turtles. Once sea turtles hatch from their nests and make their way to the water, they swim in search of a large mass of seaweed where they find refuge and protection. Storms and high tide events occurring from August through November can push the mass of seaweed onto the beach. The washback turtles, which are slightly larger than a hatchling, are extremely tired, dehydrated, and in need of medical attention. Washback volunteers survey the wrack lines and contact authorities if a stranded turtle is located.

If you see a washback turtle, please do not touch it. Beach-goers are asked to contact 1.888.404.FWCC.
St. Johns County Hosting Flood Mitigation Workshop
St. Johns County Floodplain Manager and Plans Examiner James R. Schock is hosting a public outreach workshop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on September 9 at the Ponte Vedra Branch Library, 101 Library Blvd. The workshop will provide information regarding flood risk and mitigation strategies, protection of natural resources, and hurricane preparedness, as well as public input on St. Johns County Local Mitigation Strategies. Residents will learn how to find what flood area they may be in via the County website, the value of flood insurance, and any mitigation that may be possible. For more information, please contact Mr. Schock at 904.827.6806 or jschock@sjcfl.us.
SA Amateur Annual Golf Tournament Call for Volunteers
The 2015 St. Augustine Amateur golf tournament, scheduled for October 16-18 at the St. Johns Golf Club in Elkton, FL, is seeking volunteers to staff a variety of key positions and perform valuable services including scoring, reporting, spotting, welcoming, and preparations. Individuals interested in volunteering for one, two, or three-day shifts at the tournament are requested to contact Dr. Twardy at btwardy@flagler.edu. Volunteers will receive a snack and a shirt.
