Do you know which ELCA-Primary health benefit option your congregation will select for 2014? Rostered leaders, council presidents, treasurers, and members of finance committees are strongly encouraged to attend the Health Care Reform and the ELCA Information Session this Saturday.
Saturday Sept. 14, 8:30 a.m.-12:00 noon Gustavus Adolphus, St. Paul.
This is the only scheduled opportunity for you to learn and ask questions about how the changes in federal health care will affect your employees and your congregation's budget. Terri Endres, Portico's regional representative, will be present to answer questions. The event is free but please RSVP (google form). Bring along any materials you have received in the mail from Portico.

Congratulations on a great day of service!
 | | Volunteers from North Emanuel, St. Paul |
Congregations across the Saint Paul Area Synod participated this weekend (or will be in the weekends to come) in "God's Work. Our Hands." Sunday, a churchwide day of service. Volunteers baked cookies, planted gardens, packed kits for LWR, and so much more! Stay tuned for more stories and pictures of people living out, "God's Work. Our Hands." Have a story you'd like to share? Email Christine Fifield in the synod office at christine.fifield@spas-elca.org |

Criminal Justice Book Study in November
In response to the recent approval of the ELCA social statement on criminal justice (PDF), the Immanuel Lutheran Social Action Committee and the SPAS Anti-Racism Task Force are hosting a three-part book study in November of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander as a springboard for discussion of this important topic. The first two sessions will be held at Immanuel, St. Paul. The last session will be held at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, St. Paul.
Dates and Themes
Nov. 7, New Jim Crow: Hearing the Cries. Framing the issue, understanding the anguish
Nov. 14, New Jim Crow: Prophetic Witness. Lending our voice, telling the stories of inequity
Nov. 21, New Jim Crow: Compassionate Action. Reaching out to help, sharing the burden.
Please help us spread the word by telling your friends and coworkers. If you have questions, email or call Lynnette Zika at 612.845.8886 or lynnettezika@gmail.com

Every Council Visits coming soon!
This July, a letter was sent out to congregations announcing a series of Every Council Visits this fall. The majority of the visitors have been trained; the majority of the congregations have been assigned. Congregational pastors can expect a call from your visitor in the next week or so to arrange the appropriate time for this Every Council Visit. We hope that each congregation council will allot 30 minutes of their meeting time during the months of September, October or November to welcome the visitors and have conversation with them about the ministry of your congregation, the Saint Paul Area Synod and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. More information and resources from the 2013 Every Council Visits may be found at www.spas-elca.org/congregations/stewardship.
