HHI Organizes the 5th Annual Humanitarian Action Summit: Climate and Crisis

 

 

  

The 5th Annual Humanitarian Action Summit: Climate and Crisis took place on May 13-14, 2013.

 

The Summit, co-hosted by the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and the Harvard University Center for the Environment, provided a platform to explore approaches to addressing the human and material costs of climate change.  

 

Summit discussions focused on the acute and chronic issues at the intersection of climate change and humanitarian action, including the impact of climate change on food security, forced migration, and conflict as well as the current technology, methods, and applications for monitoring and mapping climate change. The first day featured a panel discussion entitled, "Rethinking Humanitarian Aid," sponsored by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. 

 

Additionally, the first day of the Summit featured a panel discussion titled "Rethinking Humanitarian Aid," sponsored by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. Panel members discussed how humanitarian aid might be most effectively organized and delivered today.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Spaces Still Open for Humanitarian Academy Summer Workshop and Urban Humanitarian Emergencies Course

 
 
Registration still available for the Humanitarian Action Evaluation and Implementation Summer Workshop (June 17-22), an intensive, hands-on opportunity for humanitarian professionals to develop a vital skill set in development, implementation, evaluation, and monitoring of humanitarian programs. Registration is also still available for the Urban Humanitarian Emergencies Course (July 26 - 28), a three-day course organized by the Humanitarian Academy at Harvard's Lavine Family Humanitarian Studies Initiative to train humanitarian professionals on the current issues and practices involved in this unique and expanding area of research and practice.

HHI Faculty Respond to Marathon Bombing

 
HHI faculty - many of whom are emergency physicians at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Mass General Hospital, Beth Israel and Children's - were on hand to respond to the trauma of the tragic marathon bombing.

HHI Faculty Featured in IRIN News
 
 
Dr. Ronak Patel, Director of the Urbanization and Humanitarian Emergencies Program, was featured in an IRIN News article addressing the role of humanitarian aid in violent urban areas. Dr. Patel discussed the role of humanitarian law in "other situations of violence" that are not classified as international conflicts.
