Presenting the 5th Annual Humanitarian Action Summit: Climate and Crisis
The 5th Annual Humanitarian Action Summit: Climate and Crisis will take place on May 13-14, 2013.
The Summit, co-hosted by the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and the Harvard University Center for the Environment, will provide a platform to explore approaches to addressing the human and material costs of climate change. Summit discussions will focus on the acute and chronic issues at the intersection of climate change and humanitarian action, including the impact of climate change on food security, forced migration, and conflict as well as the current technology, methods, and applications for monitoring and mapping climate change.
Additionally, the first day of the Summit will feature a panel discussion titled "Rethinking Humanitarian Aid," sponsored by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. The panel will discuss how humanitarian aid might be most effectively organized and delivered today.

The Humanitarian Response Intensive Course Taking Place April 16-28
Organized by the Humanitarian Academy at Harvard's Lavine Family Humanitarian Studies Initiative, the Humanitarian Response Intensive Course is offered each year to professionals from around the world. Participants will utilize knowledge of the humanitarian field gained in the classroom learning sessions (April 16-25) during a three-day field simulation exercise (April 26-28). Attendees will spend two nights in the forest and participate in a complicated disaster and conflict scenario. During the simulation, participants will work in teams representing different humanitarian nongovernmental organizations and will engage with a wide range of local and non-state actors (roles developed and filled by faculty, course alumni, and affiliates) to create a service delivery plan.

The Humanitarian Action Evaluation and Implementation Science Summer Workshop is an intensive, hands-on opportunity for humanitarian professionals to develop a vital skill set in the development, implementation, evaluation, and monitoring of humanitarian programs. This workshop consists of two consecutive courses (taken independently or together) for those interested in mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative), and information and communication technology used in the implementation of program monitoring and evaluation. The intended audience for this workshop includes NGO and UN workers, national and local government disaster preparedness planners, and other professionals involved in the development, implementation, and evaluation and monitoring of humanitarian programs. Course leaders include faculty from the Harvard School of Public Health, Northwestern University, and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative.

The Urban Humanitarian Crises Course is a three-day course organized by the Humanitarian Academy at Harvard's Lavine Family Humanitarian Studies Initiative to train humanitarian professionals on the current issues and practices involved in this unique and expanding area of research and practice. The course faculty is experienced in humanitarian training and has on-the-ground experience with humanitarian crises in urban areas. The target audience of this event includes NGO and UN workers, national and local government disaster preparedness planners, and others involved in emergent-phase response to disasters and humanitarian crises. Course leaders include faculty from Oxford Brookes University, World Vision International, Action Against Hunger USA and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative.

HHI Faculty Research on Conflict and Reconciliation in Cambodia Featured in the Harvard Gazette
The Harvard Gazette recently featured HHI faculty Patrick Vinck and Phuong Pham's research on Cambodian attitudes towards the Khmer Rouge tribunals. Their research on Cambodia is a component of their broader work, which seeks to examine conflict and reconciliation in a number of countries.

Designing International NGO Governance

Alnoor Ebrahim will speak on the challenges of designing the governance structures of international NGOs engaged in policy advocacy. He will discuss cases of ten global organizations that have restructured the relationships between their international headquarters and their national units or members over the past decade. In doing so, they have innovated with the core problem of how to increase central authority while maintaining local legitimacy. This work is part of a research project jointly conducted with colleagues L. David Brown and Srilatha Batliwala.
