First, a HUGE thanks to every one who contributed to the project this past year. In April, we increased our membership again, and our annual appeal was our best ever, in large part because so many of you spread the word. Thanks again.

For some time now, Ellen has been sensing the need for another prominent working woman in the mural, someone who is in no way a token female. Another notable absence was a representative of all the highly skilled, overworked, underpaid teachers, principals, and other educators - both men and women - Ellen has had the privilege to meet through AMP. Kathy Reddy, the art teacher at McKinley Elementary in Fairfield, Ct., has been part of the project for the past ten years, and now she and her fifth-grade class will be part of the art, as the subjects of this latest element.

Bus 52

Bus 52
This fall, we were thrilled to be the subject of a short film by a group of energetic recent college graduates, calling themselves Bus 52, who spent the past year traveling across the country by bus to document 100 uplifting stories - at least one from each of the contiguous states - in as many short films. Their site is worth visiting, if only to see how many people are working to help others in America. The AMP story can be seen here. Surprisingly, Ellen became friends with the crew during the shoot - Rob, Steve, Chris, and
the two Amys.

Twelve years ago, when our founding board assembled in NYC for its first meeting, Paul Newman suggested we buy a bus, paint a giant brushstroke on it, and drive it across country on our state projects. In his honor, when Rob called last month to say that no buyer had emerged for Stanley (their bus, sponsored by Stanley Black & Decker, decommissioned at the end of the project), Ellen accepted it as a gift to AMP for its price in scrap.

AMP Tribute to US Military

The response has been terrific to the start of our military project, in honor of both veteran and active members of the armed forces, since we announced in our last press release. We are hoping for enough military name tags to fill the entire area around Alton Whitley's stealth bomber, so if you know anyone who would like to donate to this tribute, please pass on the word.

Veterans who do not have a name tag, may send a unit patch, a military pin, or a photo. For more information, go to our website or contact Liz Doddemeade.

The American Mural Project is a three-dimensional painting so large that a
special building is being created for it. It is a celebration of American ingenuity
and commitment to work. The project seeks to inspire, to invite collaboration,
and to reveal to people of all ages the many contributions they can make to
American culture.  It is intended as a tribute and a challenge.
