One Workplace: Redefining Healthcare Environments and Workspaces
One Workplace is the largest commercial furniture dealer in northern California, and the single source for Nurture and Steelcase furniture in the San Francisco Bay area. In May, One Workplace opened its new headquarters showroom in Santa Clara, Calif. The project successfully connected an existing office building and 25,000 square feet of warehouse into the re-imagined workplace, and also added 2,500 square feet dedicated to interconnected and integrated healthcare environments including nurses' stations, exam and patient rooms, common areas, and more.
"The showroom is quite different from the old space, which emphasized providing a highly realistic, 'typical' experience using vignettes and separate spaces - two exam rooms, two patient rooms, etc.," said Terry de la Cuesta, the Executive Director of Healthcare Environments at One Workplace. "When we moved, it changed the way we work. The new showroom is more contemporary, creative, collaborative, and compressed. It's a connective workplace. It's important to remember that healthcare environments are workplaces as well as places of care."
"The new showroom tells the story of real estate optimization; enhancing collaboration by integrating technology and products such as Sync™ and media:scapeŽ; attracting, developing and engaging with people; building brand and culture; and creating wellbeing at work," said Kathleen Lapidus, an Area Healthcare Manager of Nurture. "It's a large, interwoven story."
From a product standpoint, there is an emphasis on: - Innovation in waiting - Regard™ is highlighted in the waiting and common areas - Integration of technology - media:scape is featured, to illustrate how doctors and caregivers can provide education
- Inclusion of Empath™ in multiple settings in the showroom
"Our old showroom is a tough act to follow - it was much larger and showcased everything. But people didn't know what to expect. This showroom tells an entirely different story - it's interactive, integrated and holistic. People don't just walk through, they sit down and stay awhile," de la Cuesta said .
"Customers are seeing spaces they didn't see before, such as telemedicine, consultation spaces, and the integration of technology beyond touch-down spaces," said Lapidus. "People have followed up after touring and want to see it again to get more specific info about a product. There's just so much to take in - it's quite the experience."
One Workplace is the official Nurture showroom in the Western United States - interested in learning more or scheduling a tour? If so, contact One Workplace.

Nurture and Scott Rice Win in OK
The Saint Francis Health System in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is building a new Trauma Emergency Center tower, a 500,000 sq ft. facility with 150 new beds in 85 new rooms. The new TEC is a Level 11 Trauma Center with 45 treatment areas and, combined with their Pediatric Emergency Center, is designed to accommodate more than 120,000 patient visits annually. An RFP went out to four manufacturers and, with the help of PSP Architects in Dallas and Paul Glavas and Molly Wilcox of Scott Rice in Tulsa, Libby Larson, the Nurture Area Healthcare Manager, was able to continue the existing Steelcase relationship and also expand into a few new areas.
Scott Rice and Steelcase had been incumbent in the administrative areas for years, and over time began slowly working into the patient room. The standard Sieste sleeper sofa will remain in all 150 rooms, and will be joined by the bedside cabinet and desk unit. Traditionally, those were Hill-Rom and millwork.
The selling process at Saint Francis centered around a mock-up of both the patient room and the administrative areas. These mock-ups were constantly evolving, as various product solutions were tested over the course of almost two years. Nurture was found to exceed both the aesthetic and functional requirements and, combined with a strong warranty covering parts and labor, it was enough to supplant the former standard in much of Saint Francis. Scott Rice played a key consultative role in solving for their needs, while also meeting tight budget requirements.
The 150 patient rooms at Saint Francis will be equipped with Senza bedside, Senza desk, and a Sieste sofa sleeper, a $500,000 net in sales. Another $1.5M was spread amongst an assortment of other Steelcase brands, including Answer, Think, and Coalesse.
This project was a success for many reasons: a strong relationship between Scott Rice and Nurture, Scott Rice's service capabilities and ability to manage complex moves and phasing in and out of new and existing products, Nurture and Steelcase's commitment to quality, and the coordination of multiple Steelcase brands and their ability to leverage customer and A&D relationships in Dallas and Tulsa. When asked how such a project can be replicated, Libby replied, "It's crucial to start with the customer's goals and vision for new projects. Then, ensure product solutions and outcomes are supporting those goals." |
