Did You Know? Empath Edition
According to an article on the American Nurse Today website, a 2001 survey of nearly 5,000 nurses reported that 40% said they'd been injured on the job and approximately 60% said they viewed disabling back injuries as one of the biggest health and safety concerns in nursing.
Additionally, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employees in nursing and personal care facilities suffer more than 200,000 patient-handling injuries yearly, and workers' compensation costs related to such injuries amount to almost $1 billion per year.
These statistics along with Empath's insights and resulting features related to patient and clinician safety combine to make a compelling, powerful case for Empath! |

Nurture.com Key to Empath's Success
When Shawnee Mission Medical Center, of Merrian, Kansas, wanted to replace aging recliners in an older part of their hospital, Chief Nursing Officer Sheri Hawkins went straight to the source: the Empath product page on Nurture.com. After a thorough online inspection and comparison of Empath versus its competition, Hawkins requested a demo model and presentation of Empath from David Smith, Workplace Consultant for Scott Rice Office Works, and Bill Coble, Nurture's leader of Industry Sales and Design Alliances. Bill and David met with the head of the Med/Surg Department and walked them through the insights and research behind the recliner, then left them with the sample for about a month for the nursing staff to review.
One month was all they needed. The staff reported that they especially appreciated Empath's tight turning radius and small footprint, which were advantages over the competition, as well as necessities, given the small patient rooms at SMMC. The central-locking casters were a hit as well, as the nursing staff was impressed by how it could make their job safer and easier. The overall comfort of the chair was indicated as a positive too; one nurse remarked "feeling so comfortable will help our coalescing patients heal faster".
SMMC initially ordered 64 recliners, and followed that up with an additional 19 currently on order. The second order of 19 are destined for the Joint & Spine area - the flip-down arm capability was a crucial factor in this decision, as the nurses specifically wanted their patient transfers to be made as easy as possible. Mission accomplished!
The Empath product page features photography, the Empath design story, and an easily downloaded PDF brochure.

Relay Wins After Creative Mock-up
Iowa Health Systems ordered and installed 40 units of Relay earlier this year, after a herculean effort to create an exam room from scratch inside a dealership. Brenda Garbe and Phil Wasta built a mocked-up exam room in their Tallgrass Business Resources office, by taping off the measurements of an Iowa Health System exam room on the floor. They formed an exam room work desk out of copy paper boxes and mounted Relay on a door nearby. They then used an Empath recliner in place of an exam table. IHS brought 6 staffers to the mock-up presentation, including their own IT guy and Project Manager. At first glance they questioned the positioning when working with the EKG monitors, however, the mock-up seemed to answer all their concerns. The team from Iowa had originally been looking at a similar product to outfit the exam rooms in their cardiology center, but after discovering the alternative did not provide a solution for wire management, they turned to Relay and its unparalleled range of motion and simple aesthetic. "The effort we made to mock up the client's exam room was the ticket," said Brenda. "We got the sample set up and that did the trick, it showed them exactly what they needed." Hats off to this creative team for going above and beyond for this customer. Congrats on your win!
