The Design Intent Behind the Nurture Spaces at NeoCon

Curious as to the inspiration and design intent behind the Nurture showroom at NeoCon?

Read on the Nurture blog why Regard and Empath were used the way they were.

Did You Know? Empath Edition

According to this study in the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing, back strains and sprains account for 44% of all injuries to nursing staff and represent 10.5% of back injuries nation-wide. The only job more dangerous to your back is that of a truck driver.

That's amazing - and a good piece of information to include in an Empath presentation, as it's relevant to how the optional flip-down arms and the intuitive controls and operation help caregivers minimize bending and straining, ensuring it is easy to be safe.

Nurses in TN Love Empath's Intuitiveness

Mountain States Health Alliance (MSHA) owns 13 hospitals in eastern Tennessee and southwest Virginia.  Jennifer Feathers and Maccarena Blackhart, the Healthcare Sales Representative and Designer respectively, at Workspace Interiors, worked with Missy Whitehead, the Corporate Interior Designer for MSHA, on a project at Johnson City Medical Center (JCMC), the largest hospital in the MSHA system.

They broke ground on a new surgery tower this summer, and to match the newness of the surgery areas they decided to upgrade their patient rooms as well. MSHA wants to standardize on just one recliner, and so will gradually replace all the recliners in the 500+ bed JCMC. The Infection Control specialists identified 116 patient-room recliners and side chairs that need to be replaced immediately.

When Nurture introduced the Empath recliner, Workspace Interiors purchased four in total, two to be "showroom" recliners and two to be "customer-loaner" recliners. For this project, Kelly Register, Nurture's Healthcare Specialist in the Southeast region, came to JCMC to present the research and insights behind Empath to both infection control and nurse managers, and demonstrate the various features of the chair. The Empath "loaners" were then left at JCMC for the nurses on each floor to try out for a week.

The ease of use for the patients as well as the nurses was key to the nursing teams falling in love with Empath. They could tell that serious research and thought had gone into the design of the chair, and remarked how the ease of operation and the intuitive mechanisms of the chair would simplify life for their recovering, ill, and elderly patients. The central-locking casters and the dual flip-down arms were huge hits as well - their patient rooms are very small, so these were crucial!

MSHA had already standardized on Steelcase and Nurture products for their hospitals, because of the quality of the products and the service provided by Workspace Interiors. MSHA has used both Mitra and Mineral recliners at their other facilities, so they compared the three recliners internally to confirm they were getting the most "bang for their buck". Out of over 200 nurse and staff evaluations, the Empath recliner was the clear winner, followed by the Mineral. JCMC plans to replace all the patient room recliners with the Empath over the next two years, along with several other potential upgrades, including Nurture case goods, to the patient room as well.

Empath a Hit at Premier Breakthroughs!

Rob Lau and Libby Larson at the Premier Breakthroughs Conference

Rob Lau and Libby Larson, both of Nurture, attended the 2013 Premier Breakthroughs Conference and Exhibition in San Antonio June 11-14. Premier is helping customers to improve quality, reduce costs, and help create sustainable healthcare models.

Among the educational sessions, networking opportunities, and big-name speakers like George Will and Terry Bradshaw, Rob and Libby hosted a booth on the tradeshow floor and presented Empath and Pocket to hundreds of Premier members. One attendee, from Puerto Rico, remarked about Pocket, "this is the future of how our clinicians will be supported." Empath garnered reactions like, "the central-locking casters are well done, that'll be huge in ensuring our patient transfers are safe", "the recliner is well proportioned and looks really comfortable for some of our older folks", and "the arms can be easily cleaned - that's so important!"

Rob talked with a director of nursing from Charleston Area Medical Center in West Virginia, who had just finished a long review, over 6 months, for a new recliners standard for his facility. He described why they had decided on Empath: "The quality guarantees and warranty are important for us, but equally so is the standard central-locking mechanism that a nurse can use with no hands. For them to be able to do it while holding a chart or other device is a great insight."

Jennifer Taylor of Premier ended the day on Thursday with perhaps the quote of the show: "This recliner is so comfortable it will definitely drive up patient satisfaction scores!"
