TEDMED Recap
Missed TEDMED last week or simply hungry for more? You're in luck - we'll be talking about it on the Nurture blog over the next several months.
Did you see our conversation with Roz Cama, the healthcare interior designer? We talked about how the iPad is the new doctor's black bag - and exam room spaces must react accordingly.
This piece on the TEDMED blog summed it all up - "Nurture Introduces Patient-Friendly Exam Room Design at TEDMED".

Empath at Phoenix Children's Hospital
The new tower at Phoenix Children's Hospital was specifically built with kids in mind. Everywhere you look there are bright colors, games, pictures with animals, anything that will help a child feel at ease when they are in the hospital. Now, Empath joins the rainbow of colors, as PCH has estimated they will order over 200 recliners for current and future projects. With Empath as the new standard for their hospital, hopes are high that this will be a long and successful partnership.
Matthew Beals, a Nurture Independent Rep, and Megan Burraston, a Nurture Area Healthcare Manager, with the help of Kim Dalton of Dalton Interiors, introduced Empath to the decision makers at PCH. They made a jet trip to Grand Rapids and were not planning originally on seeing the new recliner, but changed their minds at the last minute. The presentation obviously went well because they requested a sample sent out to Phoenix, where they could compare Empath against Mitra, and also a Nemschoff recliner. Right off the bat Empath stuck out, as it was the only recliner able to fit through their patient room doorway without needing to be twisted and contorted at a funny angle. The client liked that they wouldn't have to make the patient stand up in order to take them in the recliner out into the hallway.
Also scoring in Empath's favor is that the arm of the chair is wide enough for a child's arm and all of the accompanying tubes while they receive chemotherapy treatment. The arm being easily gripped and then cleaned when they are finished was also important. The versatility of Empath was vital - kids are more receptive to these fun, brightly-colored recliners than to an uninviting, elevated exam table. That allows doctors to connect with their young patients and make a scary process a little bit more comfortable.
These features and the insights behind them will ensure Empath continues to stand out at Phoenix Children's Hospital for years to come.

Empath A Hit At California Nursing Conference!
The Association of California Nurse Leaders recently held their 35th annual conference in San Diego, and for the first time, Nurture was in attendance. Attended by over 400 nurse executives from all over the state, this was a perfect audience for which Nurture to present the award-winning Empath recliner and Pocket with iPad. Nurture Area Healthcare Managers Bob Thomson and Jared Mejeur conducted over 25 demonstrations to those in attendance.
"The response was very positive towards both products, especially the Empath and the research that led to its creation", Bob said. Bob and Jared stressed the importance of the research behind the design of Empath, and tailored their message specifically for the audience of nurses. Some reactions:
One said, "Finally, someone designed a recliner which takes the needs of our nursing staff into consideration."
Another remarked, "I really like the ability to customize the chair with a variety of options."
A third: "I appreciate the consideration of making the recline mechanism so easy for the patient". |
