Missed Our Legislative Luncheon?

On July 8, the Greater Bothell Chamber of Commerce hosted elected officials from the state and local level to speak about how elected representatives are working for citizens at a county, state and federal level.

"Today we're going to focus on things that I get to spend a lot of time on - legislative work," said Kelly Snyder, UW Bothell vice chancellor and moderator of the panel discussion.

Guest speakers Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe, Rep. Derek Stanford, and King County Councilmember Rod Dembowski were on hand to speak about the important issues they are tackling on behalf of local constituents, including transit and transportation which are always a dominant topic at any level of government.

STOP Consumer Trafficking is Good for Small Businesses
The movement starts in Bothell, WA by Localloop

Jason Gaylord, Founder of the STOP Consumer Trafficking Movement and the company Localloop, continues his 31 day rooftop vigil, living on top of the Bothell Chiropractic building. The vigil started on July 4, 2015 (the Declaration of Internet Independence Day,) and is being held on behalf of consumers and small business owners, bringing awareness as to the dangers of consumer trafficking, which is simply defined as "taking your personal information and selling it for profit without informed consent."

The purpose of Gaylord's vigil is to raise awareness as to the personal costs of losing online privacy, the impact to small business owners and local economy, and most importantly offering two solutions at the end of the 31 day campaign: (1) for consumers, a way to fight back and regain personal online privacy and (2) for small business owners, how to fight back and learn how to become a more effective and profitable owner by better understanding what today's consumer want and how to best give it to them while still making a profit. To learn more, go to: http://www.StopConsumerTrafficking.com or http://localloop.com/BusinessOwner/BusinessHome.aspx.

UW Bothell is Again Ranked #1 in State

UWB Logo

For the second year in a row, the University of Washington Bothell has been ranked No. 1 in both the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest, according to a ranking of best colleges in the most recent issue of Money magazine.

Nationally, Money ranked UW Bothell No. 36 in its overall list of best public colleges - up one from No. 37 in 2014. The magazine ranked 736 colleges and universities on 21 measures in three categories: quality, affordability and outcomes.

UW Bothell's ranking places the institution among some of the most distinguished names in higher education, sitting just behind Brown University, Colgate University and Cornell University and ahead of Bucknell University and Carnegie Mellon.

In the list of the 50 "colleges that add the most value," UW Bothell is No. 2 among public universities with enrollment of less than 10,000 students.  UW Bothell earned a value-added grade of A, which measures how well students perform as measured by graduation rates, student loan defaults and post-grad earnings (compared to schools with similar student profiles).

According to Money, about 35 percent of UW Bothell students come from low-income families, but two-thirds of those students go on to graduate - 12 percentage points better than other schools with similar student profiles. Additionally, UW Bothell graduates earn more than graduates of comparable schools and about half graduate without debt.

In the "50 best colleges that you can actually get into" list, UW Bothell is No. 2.

You Can Show Support This Thursday for Improved Transit on the SR 522 Corridor
Thursday, July 23

1:30PM

Northshore residents and cities are pushing for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on SR 522 to be on the Sound Transit 3 (ST3) project list.  BRT would get commuters to Seattle more quickly and reliably.  They are also asking that ST3 include a light rail study for SR 522 to connect up with future light rail on the I-5 and I-405 light rail spines.

A coalition of Northshore citizens has formed, and they're calling themselves 522 Transit Now!

This Thursday (7/23) the Sound Transit Board will be reviewing data received from recent public outreach efforts and they will also be going over the project list.  You can show your support by joining Northshore citizens at this meeting, and the 522 Transit Now! coalition will be there with yellow t-shirts to hand out.

Would you be willing to attend the board meeting and don a yellow t-shirt?  You can show up around 1:30PM on Thursday and only have to stay for about 45 minutes. The meeting location is at Union Station, 401 Jackson Street.

After an extensive nationwide search, Bastyr University selects Charles "Mac" Powell, PhD, as its new president. He will oversee the University's campuses and clinics located in Washington state and California.

"I'm thrilled and humbled to be named president of Bastyr University," says Dr. Powell. "Bastyr is known both nationally and internationally for its academic excellence in natural medicine and commitment to social justice. I look forward to helping build upon its decades of success."

Eye of the Needle Winery Dedicates Label to Feed Hungry

"When they're buying a bottle of 12th Blend wine, they're actually feeding two people," said Lauren Bullock. She and her husband Bob own Eye of the Needle Winery in Woodinville.

For every bottle of their 12th Blend wine sold in Washington, they donate money to Northwest Harvest, a statewide nonprofit that distributes food to food banks, meal programs and other organizations that feed the hungry.

Last year, their "Bottles for Bread" campaign raised thousands of dollars for Northwest Harvest, and they went over their goal of 100,000 meals donated.
