COMMUNITY:

This week marks the beginning of our Spring Community Business Academy. Amongst the Spring class is the 2014 Start Something Challenge first place winner, Ninotchka Johnson who won $10,000 for her business Top Notch By Design. We asked Ninotchka about her decision to take the CBA class this semester. See what she had to say!

"The amazing experience that I had while taking part in the Start Something Challenge inspired me to take the Community Business Academy. Many of the SSC participants completed the CBA prior to entering the Challenge and always told me about their experiences. Rising Tide Capital makes educating their entrepreneurs a priority. Every person I met was willing to help and every event I attended was a positive experience. I am assuming the CBA will be no different." -Ninotchka Johnson

Join us in congratulating our Director of Communications Esther Fraser for being selected to participate in the 2015 Emerging Leaders in Microbusiness Squared Program (ELM2). Esther and 11 other emerging leaders will convene over a nine-month period for joint learning and discussion on critical issues within the microbusiness development and leadership realm.

"I am so grateful to be selected to participate as an ELM2 fellow alongside so many inspiring leaders in microbusiness. We are all working within our organizations to create economic opportunities in underserved communities, and to be able to come together and talk about our work, and share best practices is invigorating," said Fraser. This month, we added even more professionals to the Rising Tide Help Desk to better serve our entrepreneurs and offer a larger variety of services. The Help Desk was created to provide CBA graduates with a source of trusted vetted small business service providers at an affordable cost to serve their needs.

See how the Help Desk worked for one of our entrepreneurs!

AAentreCelebrating African American Entrepreneurs

In honor of Black History Month Rising Tide Capital reached out to successful African American entrepreneurs to ask, "What does being an African American business owner mean to you during Black History Month?"
They all shared similar responses on honoring their rich history while giving back to their respective communities. See Tiffany "The Budgetnista" Aliche's response below:

"Becoming The Budgetnista (a financial educator), was a purposeful choice. My industry is one where there are very few women and fewer people of color. The lack of diversity meant that too many people that needed help, were not receiving it. I wanted to change that. Black History Month is a reminder that equality and fairness are more than just ideas, they are possibilities that start when one person makes a choice to make a difference."  Read more.
