In June we hosted two SSC video pitch tutorials in Jersey City and Newark. Each attendee worked with RTC staff to create a video and perfect their business description for entry into the Start Something Challenge.  

 

 

New Jersey entrepreneurs have until July 3 to submit their 30-second Animoto video and business description on the Start Something website and join the Challenge to win $10,000

Three recent CBA graduates won a total of $2,750 in prizes after pitching their businesses in front of an audience at our fifth Plan & Pitch Competition.Thanks to the hard work of our corporate volunteers, 23 entrepreneurs received one-on-one coaching to perfect their business pitches.

Microgrants were awarded to: Rafal Rogoza of Bike Parking Hub (1st Place: $1,500), Alysis Vazquez of the The Chilltown Kitchen ( 2nd place: $750) and Jody Yearwood of Jody's Book Jubilee (3rd Place: $500.)

In early June we celebrated 130 graduates of our Community Business Academy at a ceremony held in the Goldman Sachs building in downtown Jersey City. Featured speakers included City of Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, our Chairman of the Board of Trustees Doug Forrester, co-founders Alex Forrester and Alfa Demmellash as well as representatives from each of the six sessions of the CBA.

You can now purchase Rising Tide Entrepreneur Nicole Silva's hand-made skincare products at the Paramus, West Orange, Madison and Edgewater New Jersey Whole Food locations. 


Nicole, second place winner of the 2013 Start Something Challenge, used her $7,500 prize to design new labels and update her packaging to meet FDA standards so she could sell her products in larger stores. Congratulations Nicole!

 

"We are so excited about this opportunity! This is going to give us great credibility and the exposure we need to increase our customer base. Over the next few weeks we will be making appointments with other Whole Foods' locations with hopes of being in more stores. We are ready to spread the love with DollyMoo," Nicole said.

Rising Tide Entrepreneur Gabby Creery to Host Theater Festival

Gabby Creery, owner of Metropolis Coach, is looking for playwrights to participate in her New York New Works Theater Festival. Participants will have the opportunity to have their plays reviewed by a panel of Broadway Producers and Emmy Award winners, a chance to win $500, and their piece aired on local television.

Recent Graduate Launches Website for Montessori School

Spring 2014 CBA graduate Myani Lawson recently launched the website for her new Bergen-Lafayette Montessori School. Located at 324 Communipaw Avenue in Jersey City, this dual language preschool and kindergarten center will offer affordable, high-quality, early-childhood education to children 18 months - 6 years old starting this September!

We recently caught up with the 2013 Start Something Challenge Champions to see how their businesses are doing since the Challenge.  

  • Coretta Owusu owner of aSuiteStay and first place winner has used the prize money to update her website, develop a mobile application, hire interns and increase the depth of services she offers.  
  • Second place winner Nicole Silva is the owner of DollyMoo which offers hand-blended skin-care products. With her $7,500 she updated the labels on her products to meet FDA standards, resulting in a partnership to sell her products in four Whole Foods stores.
  • Third place winner Liz Migliore of Jersey City Veggie Burgers used her cash prize to secure a location to increase her production and sales.

I am inspired by the lives and values of Jesus Christ, William Wilberforce and Mother Theresa.

 

2) What do you love to do on the weekends?

During the weekend, I enjoy doing Bikram Yoga, spending time with my family and hiking the Appalachian Trail or local Catskill Mountains.

 

3) What's your hidden passion?

My hidden passion is playing and singing Irish & Folk Pub Songs with my guitar. I learned how to play on my own!

 

4) What's one song that belongs on the playlist to your life?
