Hawaiian Culture Series with Alan Robert Akana
Friday August 29th

8:00pm - 9:30pm
Kalani

Kalani's monthly Hawaiian Culture Events provide a unique forum where Hawai`i and its peoples can come together and share cultural knowledge, customs, and aloha to all willing to receive.

These events feature a different Hawaiian cultural practitioner who speaks and shares 'ike (wisdom) through talk story, hō`ike`ike (demonstration), or hana`ana (performances).

Event Description:
When Alan Akana realized he had missed the gift of hearing many of his family's stories, his search for his history became a gift to all his readers. The Volcano is Our Home introduces us in a very personal way to the influences that shaped Hawaii from an isolated group of islands inhabited by remarkable people with a unique and beautiful culture into the tourist mecca known today by travelers from all over the world. The author takes you to the real Hawaii, so that you may walk these islands with new understanding of the lost way of life of those who have gone before. You will journey over 250 years with a Hawaiian family, guided by their connection to the land, each other and a rich spiritual realm. You will join them on the slopes of Kilauea Volcano as they confront the arrival of each new wave of change-from Captain Cook to the missionaries, to the overthrow of the kingdom, to the 50th State, to the 21st century.

Alan Akana is one of the current generation of Hawaiians who has perfected the art of "talking story." -Gail Larsen, Founder of Real Speaking and Author of Transformational Speaking: If You Want to Change the World, Tell a Better Story

Bio:

Alan Robert Akana was born in Palo Alto, CA. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Westmont College (Santa Barbara, CA) and Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Fuller Theological Seminary (Pasadena, CA).

He is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and has served churches in Hawaii, Montana, Utah, Texas and California. He is an accomplished artist and has extensive experience providing fundraising counsel to nonprofit organizations. Dr. Akana enjoys writing, watercoloring, running, hiking, traveling, and spending time with his son Palani.

He is a descendant of the proud and courageous people who lived on the slopes of Kilauea Volcano.

He lives on the Island of Kauai and may be contacted at [email protected].

Location: Kalani

Admission: By donation; proceeds collected will go directly to the speaker.

Puna Mastermind Group

On Saturday, Sept. 13th, from 4:30-6:30 at the "Grow Room" of Hawaiian Sanctuary, we will meet to accomplish the following:
  • Hear individual reports on current activities of members of PMC that further our vision and purpose.
  • See how members can support each other in achieving their respective projects.
  • Develop a wider support base by encouraging other like-minded, civically conscious individuals to join our collective efforts. (Having just come from a meeting of Puna Pona Alliance, I saw first-hand how a group of committed individuals have created a powerful organization to safeguard the welfare of Puna. The meeting was a lesson in local democracy at its best.)

Rescheduled for Saturday September 20th: 1pm-4pm
at Hawaiian Sanctuary

Puna, now is the time to take the Next Step.

Join us for the most important permaculture collaboration our district has seen, as we explore, together, how to create modern ahupuaʻa, and share the abundant knowledge we have in Puna.

This initiative involves all of the key leaders in permaculture and sustainability in Puna: it is co-stewarded by Kalani and Hawaiian Sanctuary, and actively supported by Laʻakea, the Keliihoomalu ʻOhana in Kalapana, many of Puna's local permaculturists, and financially supported by the County of Hawaiʻi through the stewardship of Greggor Ilagan. The collaboration to put this initiative together is unprecedented.

On Saturday, September 20th, the kickoff will feature a dynamic talk story with Hunter Heaivilin, who will lay down the framework for the Modern Ahupuhaʻa. Enjoy networking with other permaculturalists over pupus, bean-to-bar hand made chocolates, and a closing potluck, celebrating the abundance of Puna. Come to this event with your ideas to share on what the Modern Ahupuhaʻa means to you. The goal of the Modern Ahupuaʻa Permaculture Series is to gather knowledge, practices and social strategies to remember and share our best resources.

It is time for Puna to collaborate and build this "Next Step" together. Save the third Saturday of each month for this valuable time together, as we learn and grow our modern ahupuaʻa, together.Community Arts Programming is one of the most significant contributions Kalani makes to our local community.

Speaker Bio:
Hunter Heaivilin holds a degrees in Tropical Forest Ecosystem and Agroforestry Management, and Sustainable Community Development. He has worked and taught on projects throughout Hawaii, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and South America.

Hunter is lead designer at his consultancy firm Pono Permaculture and the coordinator of the Oahu Farm to School Network. He is currently completing his Masters of Urban and Regional Planning at the University ofHawaiʻi with a research focus on policy levers to support urban agricultural programming in Honolulu,Hawaiʻi.

Boyhood

Sunday, August 24th at 2:30 PM

Monday and Tuesday, August 25th & 26th at 7 PM

Directed by Richard Linklater, Drama, Rated R, 165 minutes

Starring Ellar Coltrane, Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette

Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater's Boyhood is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason, who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Boyhood charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before and is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting.
