Looking for Band Players
|
Nagdeo, a local progressive, shamanic, folk-rock band is reforming after releasing it's first album, Living The Dream(s). Most of the folks in the original band have either left the island or got involved in other projects. We are currently a singer/guitarist/song writer, Ano Tarletz Hanamana, and a bass player, Eric Berger. We're looking for a lead/electric guitarist, drummer, female vocalist, and keyboard player. We'd also like to find a horn player of some kind. Snippets of the Nagdeo album can be heard on iTunes and other MP3 stores. We're really dedicated to what we're doing, but we can only go so far without more members of the band. Email Ano if you are interested or know someone who might be -- nagdeo@gaiayoga.org

Making UC Berkeley Possible!
Corrected link!
|
My name is Jerry Javier. I'm sixteen, and a senior at the Hawaii Academy of Arts & Science in Pahoa. Recently I was admitted to the University of California Berkeley. Berkeley is one of the best school in the world, and as a low income student who has grown up in Hawaii it is an amazing opportunity to experience more of the world. My family is very poor, and my single mother does not have the resources to support my education. I've write about LGBT issues for the Big Island Chronicle, and I am a very active member of the community, especially at my school. I have been in the Tribune Herald multiples time. On the cover for the HAAS haunted house, and featured for being part of the Pahoa High School varsity cross country team. I have a great back story that I would be willing to share about over coming the adversities of being homeless throughout high school, having a drug addict father with cancer, and being trained by Olympic goal metal receiver Annetta Lucero, and making my way to UC Berkeley. I am reaching out to people in the community who can help me meet the high prices of out of state tuition. Any assistance in getting people to see that I am asking for assistance would be greatly appreciated. It is not everyday that a low income student from Puna makes it to Berkeley. If you have any questions please ask. My donation site is http://www.gofundme.com/makingberkeleypossible. On the site a bio is included. Any help we be greatly appreciated.

EVENTS ARE LISTED BELOW CHRONOLOGICALLY:

June 23rd at Kalani;
The Great Film: Dark Days
Time: 8:00-9:30 pm
Dark Days is a documentary made by Marc Singer, a British filmmaker. The film follows a group of people living in an abandoned section of the New York City underground railway system, more precisely the area of the so called Freedom Tunnel. When he relocated from London to Manhattan, Marc Singer was struck by the number of homeless people he had seen throughout the city. After living with them for a number of months, he decided to create a documentary in order to help them financially. The film's crew consisted of the subjects themselves, who rigged up makeshift lighting and steadicam dollies, and learned to use a 16mm camera with black & white Kodak film. Singer himself had never been a filmmaker before, and saw the production of Dark Days as a means of gaining better accommodations for the residents of the tunnel.

Hawaiian Culture Series: He Ola Hou O Ke Kumu Niu
with John Keoni Aweau Turalde
Kalani's monthly Hawaiian Culture Events provide a unique forum where Hawai`i and its peoples can come together and share cultural knowledge, customs, and aloha to all willing to receive.
These events feature a different Hawaiian cultural practitioner who speaks and shares 'ike (wisdom) through talk story, hō`ike`ike (demonstration), or hana`ana (performances).
Event Description: He Ola Hou O Ke Kumu Niu is a community based group centered around the art of carving the pahu or Hawaiian drum. The organization supports, and practices other Hawaiian crafts ,traditions, and lifestyles. They offer hands-on educational programs, lectures, and demonstrations to schools & community organizations. He Ola Hou O Ke Kumu Niu is a non-profit 501c3 organization.
Facilitator: John Keoni Aweau Turalde is a fisherman, paddler, and carver. He carves pahu (Hawaiian Drums) & Wa'a (Canoes), and has also taught these skills to kids in the public school system. Hawaii Massage School: Basic Watsu & Healing Dance
Alexis Lee
July 18, 2014 - July 19, 2014
Watsu is a form of bodywork which is performed while floating in body-temperature water. The recipient of a Watsu treatment is supported by floats as well as the therapist, while the therapist gently stretches the body. The nature of performing bodywork in the water allows for the body to be stretched and manipulated in unique ways, that may not be possible on land.
Kalani has one of the largest Watsu pools in the United States, an excellent facility to learn this beautiful and transformative art.
Basic Watsu: Students will learn to support someone and stay grounded in water. They will learn the body mechanics that underlie Watsu by first flowing them as in Tai Chi, and then with a person in their arms. They will experience the stillness that is the ground of presence, and incorporate the way the heart and breath connection can be maintained throughout a Watsu, before having to memorize any sequence.
Transition & Flow: (the last 34 hours of Basic Watsu) Students will learn to connect the techniques learned in the Basic Watsu into a simple flowing form. Emphasis is centered around moving smoothly between all the major positions of Watsu using long gracefully transitions. On land students will be introduced to co-centering by exploring and sharing what "being held" means to the giver and receiver.

July 25, 2014 - July 26, 2014
Healing Dance has many aspects, all based on the healing power of movement. This 16 hour course is designed to acquaint participants with the Healing Dance.
The history, theory and applications of the technique are covered first. Then, entering the pool, each participant is given a direct experience of Healing Dance through receiving a mini-session. Body mechanics and body awareness are emphasized through games and dance on land and in the water.
Students discover how to support and move their receiver in the water. These skills enable them to learn a simple practice sequence that will prepare them to take Basic Healing Dance.

investment campaign!
If you have been considering investing, it is still not too late to participate: 'pledges' of investment dollars are still being received through early next week.
Now that we can successfully re-write our existing mortgage,we are turning our attention to projects that will expand Polestar's ability to serve in the coming years: housing, solar power, community center upgrades and more. These projects will pay for themselves through increased revenue and cost savings.
Thank you again...

The next exhibit at the VAC Gallery will feature the artwork of Joe Laceby, who uses sun printing, also known as cyanotype printing, to create imagery. The cyanotype technique is an old form of photography utilizing the sun's UV rays to create imagery. Joe Laceby is an artist living along the Hamakua coast on old sugar cane land. This area is rich with iconic Hawaiian relics which he translates visually through the cyanotype process. "The relationship of the sun prints to early western contact is a way to capture certain images from those earlier times, with what I do now. The sun print itself creates that historical connection." The Gallery exhibit will run from May 24 through July 20.
