Improvements for Healing
As health care continues to change rapidly, Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital (JHACH) has redesigned both inpatient and outpatient care to deliver patient-centered care-at the right place, at the right time-for the best outcomes.

"The triple aim described by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement prevents or reduces the length of many hospital stays, provides more care on an outpatient basis, and improves the health of children in the communities we serve," explains Paul Colombani, M.D., M.B.A., chair of surgery and president, All Children's Specialty Physicians.

Innovations such as the opening of a Surgical Extended Care Unit and Pediatric Medicine Short Stay Unit, collaborative asthma care that has decreased length-of-stay and readmission rates, and the growth of outpatient infusion services has meant that fewer children need to be admitted to the pediatric medicine units.

"At the same time, inpatient acuity as determined by case mix index reached a new high for our hospital as we increasingly perform highly complex surgeries and care for extremely premature infants and critically ill children," Colombani notes. "In addition, more of our physicians are providing care at community hospitals, helping children and families receive the Johns Hopkins All Children's quality pediatric care closer to home through these affiliations."

Your physician liaison can provide you with additional information on all the locations where JHACH care is available across the west coast of Florida.

Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital Recognized by U.S. News & World Report in 6 Categories
Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital (JHACH) is pleased to have been ranked by U.S. News & World Report in six specialties: cancer, cardiology & heart surgery, neonatology, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.

"These rankings suggest that our journey to being an exemplary high-quality, family-centered care provider for children is progressing," said Jonathan Ellen, M.D., president, CEO and physician-in-chief of

JHACH and vice dean and professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "While we are proud of our progress, our work is just beginning. We will continue to make investments in our mission and in our people through our residency and fellowship programs, recruitment of physician scientists, in our education and research building under construction, and most of all, in our care of patients to ensure they receive the highest quality of care that is compassionate and innovative for best outcomes."

Congratulations to the Recipients of the Councill C. Rudolph Award
Earlier this summer, four members of the Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital (JHACH) medical staff received the prestigious Councill C. Rudolph Award at a medical staff reception held to engage and connect physicians.

Named for Dr. Councill C. Rudolph, Pinellas County's first pediatrician, the award honors physicians who, over an extended period of time, have demonstrated excellence and compassion in caring for children in the community and region.

Chief of Staff Joseph Perno, M.D., led the festivities and presented the awards to the following recipients selected from a group of 16 nominees:

Richard Harmel, M.D.: Dr. Harmel led the Division of Pediatric General Surgery for more than two decades and was the founding medical director of the hospital's joint pediatric trauma program with Bayfront Medical Center. He retired in 2015 after more than 25 years on the medical staff.

Tony Napolitano, M.D.: Dr. Napolitano, senior neonatologist at JHACH, is the medical director of Johns Hopkins All Children's LifeLine transport team as well as the medical director for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sarasota Memorial Hospital through its affiliation with All Children's Specialty Physicians. He nurtures ongoing relationships with other affiliate hospitals to help bring high-quality neonatology care to children across our region. In 2012 he became Chair of the Department of Pediatric Medicine.

Sharon Perlman, M.D.: Dr. Perlman chairs the Division of Pediatric Nephrology at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital and cares for patients with chronic and acute kidney disease. She is also a professor of pediatrics with USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. She is an advocate for the special needs of children with renal disease here in Tampa Bay and at the national level.

Linda Rice, M.D.: Dr. Rice, a former pediatric anesthesiologist at JHACH, was known to whisper reassuring words to a child who is about to have surgery. She was a member of the pain team that helps hospitalized children who are experiencing acute or chronic pain. Dr. Rice was active in medical staff committees and patient safety initiatives that contribute to excellent care at JHACH.

Hector Monforte, M.D., Named Director of Pediatric Biorepository
Hector Monforte, M.D., was named the new director of the pediatric biorepository at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, effective April 1, 2016. He also serves as the hospital's director of anatomic pathology.

The state-of-the-art biorepository at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital (JHACH) was established in 2013. It is the only pediatric biorepository in Florida and one of just a handful of pediatric biorepositories in the United States to earn accreditation from the College of American Pathologists.

"Dr. Monforte's clinical experience within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital will bridge the clinical and research domains of the biorepository and support the growth of translational research," said Sylvia Powell, M.B.A., associate dean of administration.

Dr. Monforte worked closely with Margaret Penno, Ph.D., a biorepository expert with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who was the interim director of the pediatric biorepository at JHACH until her retirement in March 2016. She will continue to share her expertise in a consulting role.
