Solar Oregon Announces New Executive Director

The Solar Oregon Board of Directors recently announced the appointment of Ron "Mac" McDowell as our new Executive Director.  Many of our members and associates already know Mac. Over the past five years he has served Solar Oregon in many capacities as a volunteer - as a member; workshop presenter; Solar Ambassador; solarize project leader; writer and promoter; a board member; and most recently the president of the board.

Mac will lead Solar Oregon's work to bolster existing programs and pursue development in creating new programs that enhance the mission of leading the way to a clean energy future by demonstrating the successful use of solar energy in Oregon.  He has always been connected to our cause and mission in a deep and meaningful way and we're excited to welcome him as our new Executive Director.

A Letter from Claire Carlson

After four years on the Solar Oregon staff, we said a bittersweet farewell to Claire Carlson. Starting at Solar Oregon as an unpaid intern and stepping into the successive roles of Education Coordinator, Program Manager, and Executive Director, Claire has made a tremendous contribution to solar energy education and advancement in Oregon. And while Claire has moved on to pursue new endeavors, we are glad to know that she will continue to be an advocate for solar energy and energy efficiency both in her new position and as a Solar Oregon lifetime member. Best wishes Claire, and our thanks from Solar Oregon!

Dear Solar Oregon Members and Supporters,

I would like to let you know that I have transitioned to a new position and I will no longer be leading Solar Oregon as Executive Director. I have accepted a position with Lockheed Martin's Energy and Environment Services and will be working on program development for Energy Trust of Oregon's Multifamily program. After 4 years with Solar Oregon working with advocates, homeowners, business owners, industry members and others I feel that I am, and will remain, part of an increasingly important and growing community which recognizes the need to increase our individual contributions to the energy needs of our state and our world.

Solar Now! University Unites Oregon's Solar Community

Solar advocates, industry representatives, municipal and community leaders came together in Coos Bay this fall to share grassroots solutions for developing Oregon's clean energy economy.

This year's Solar Now! University featured a pre-conference meet and great at the Sol Coast headquarters in downtown Coos Bay, a keynote address describing the vision for a quarter million solar rooftops in Oregon, a beautiful dinner at the Black Market Gourmet, and a tour of the Coos Bay Fire Station's solar electric and solar water heating systems. Sessions covered topics from the basics of solar technology to solar charging for electric vehicles, strategies for reducing PV "soft costs," community solar, and more.

Conference participants representing over a dozen communities enthusiastically shared experiences and made new connections for future projects. The dedication to realizing the vision for a clean energy future was apparent, and the examples of innovative solar projects taking place across the state were truly inspiring.

Thanks to our sponsors, the Coos Bay conference host committee, speakers, volunteers and attendees for making this year's Solar Now! University a success.

GORDY MOLITOR, Board Treasurer

Gordy Molitor is man of many talents and passions. He came to the Solar Oregon Board as an experienced manager of domestic and international not-for-profits. For twenty years, Gordy worked overseas with the international relief and development agency - CARE International. We're fortunate he is able to share his experience in managing NGOs with our staff and board, including his expertise in planning, grant & project management, financial management, and team leadership.

His impressive resume also includes other leadership positions such as Operations Director of The Wetlands Conservancy and Executive Director of Green Empowerment, an organization promoting renewable energy in the developing world. He also recently served on the board of directors for EarthShare Oregon as a member of their finance committee.

Gordy's first effort at increasing solar energy in Oregon dates back to 1982, when he organized one of the state's first solar energy technician training programs. Today, he and his wife, Suellen Rinker, are living with solar electric (PV) via a system they installed on their Southwest Portland home in 2010. They're now Solar Ambassadors who tell others that their solar system has reduced their monthly electric equal pay amount by two thirds.

SolarWorld Tour and Basics of Going Solar Workshop

Tour begins at 6pm and the Basics of Going Solar workshop starts at 7pm. There is no cost to attend, but please register in advance as space is limited.
November Solar Drinks
The June Key Delta Community Center
and the Living Building Challenge

Come celebrate the installation of the June Key Delta Community Center's new solar array at our November Solar Drinks. This month's speakers are Chris Poole-Jones of the June Key Delta Center and Jennifer Hall of Synchro Solar.

Owned and operated by the Portland Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the JKDCC was renovated to the Living Building Challenge design standard and opened on 2011. The electrical system is designed with energy efficient lighting, appliances and HVAC (including two electrical heat pumps). The 18.36 kW array is estimated to offset the facility's electrical needs, and uses SolarWorld modules, SMA Inverters, SilverBack Solar Racking and DECK Monitoring.

Solar Oregon Adopts Carbon Tax Resolution

Solar Oregon supports a market-based solution to climate change. "Climate change is largely caused by burning fossil fuels and the United States should put a tax on carbon and return the revenue back to consumers," said Ron "Mac" McDowell, Executive Director of Solar Oregon. "In this way, the tax would not put a drag on the economy and would encourage the market to develop cheaper, alternative fuels - such as solar energy." The market-based solution sought by the organization is a revenue-neutral carbon tax.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the National Academy of Sciences, the American Meteorological Society, the Catholic Church, the U. S. Department of Defense and others all say that climate change is happening and is caused by man's burning of carbon fuels.
