In 1993 I was not thinking about solar power generation when I had an area cleared in the center of twenty acres of twelve year old Douglas fir trees for a house, landscaping, and garden. But then with that clearing we ended up with a fair amount of open space, especially to the south and west of the house. That fit very well with the installation early last year by Andrew Koyaanisqatsi of Solar Energy Solutions of thirty two photovoltaic panels. That was a great addition to the solar panels we have had for hot water ever since the house was first built.

Now Taking Applications for 2013
Host Community

On behalf of Solar Now! we would like to invite Oregon Coast communities to apply to host the 2013 Solar Now! University conference. The fourth annual Solar Now! University will bring together communities across Oregon to become a part of the Solar Now! statewide educational and outreach effort.

The conference will be held September 26th- September 28th, 2013. Click here to download the 2013 Solar Now! University Community Host Application. Applications are due on Friday, May 17th.

Solar Now! University is a small conference that provides community solar champions the technical education and background needed to manage solar educational and outreach programs in their communities. This year, Solar Now! University will focus on the objectives of the US Department of Energy Rooftop Solar Challenge II which is aimed at innovative, local-government-level solutions for eliminating market barriers and lowering the non-hardware balance of system costs ("soft costs") of grid-tied photovoltaics (PV).

The selected host community will partner with Solar Oregon staff to coordinate logistics for the Solar Now! University Conference and recruit local participation. In past-years, communities have found that hosting the SN!U Conference has been a great way to jumpstart local renewable energy programs or to highlight successful initiatives.

Last year's Solar Now! University attracted municipal, nonprofit and community based organizations from across Oregon for a three day conference. All participants who attended received:
  • Technical education on solar options, technology basics and the financial resources and options available in Oregon for going solar
  • Updates on Oregon solar policy, permitting and codes
  • The opportunity to connect with other like-minded communities, hear success stories and share lessons learned
  • The chance to network with leaders in Oregon's solar energy industry
  • Online materials and resources to use in their community

It was the perfect day for the first annual Solar Winery Tour. The sun was out, the wine was flowing and the solar was quietly providing clean energy. With over tour 50 attendees on 2 buses the event was a great success and one we can't wait to do again soon.

Thank you to all of our guests and sponsors for helping to promote clean energy and supporting Solar Oregon!

Solar Drinks Goes to School  PSU Solar Research Lab

Solterra green roof

Join us on Wednesday May 15th when we drop in at PSU's Solar Research Lab to learn and have a peak at their projects. This will include exploring solar and green roof technology how combining these green technologies can improve building performance, energy conservation and solar power production as well as methods of artificial photosynthesis imagining and improving the materials and processes used to absorb and convert sunlight into energy.

We will be meeting at Hot Lips Pizza on Campus and taking small groups on tours of the labs. Due to the small spaces we will need to limit the size of the group this month so be sure you sign-up early!
