John Cogar's 2.8 kW system charges 16 Rolls batteries and powers a 220 volt water pump. The system is grid connected, so that there is a backup source of power to run the water pump if necessary, and he has a 6 kW propane generator to serve as a backup to the backup! Now THAT'S preparedness.

Letter from a solar enthusiast and policy advocate abroad by Mark Pengilly
I have been in India and Bhutan for the last three weeks, trekking along the border between India and Nepal and, more recently, here in Bhutan. We have seen distributed solar in the most remote places imaginable. In villages two days' walk from any road, where everything has to be carried in by horseback or humanback, houses often have a solar panel, or sometimes two. Remote yakherders' houses sometimes had PV panels. We visited a primary school with six students, some of whom walk an hour a day each way to school, which had a 12-volt system powered by a single PV panel. I haven't seen a single incandescent bulb; CFLs are the rule. Those yakherders' panels probably make it possible for students to do their homework at night.

Life after Solar Oregon: a letter from our former Communications Intern
By Michelle Udem
In my time as a Communications Intern at Solar Oregon, I was thrust into an environment that I now think of as a solar-powered pool -- ripe for cultivating new ideas, with the warmth for embracing tried and true skills.

Call on EarthShare for help with your office's Green Team
Do you work for a company that has a Green Team or Sustainability Committee? Many Pacific Northwest employers have these squads of employees who are committed to improving their workplace's environmental performance, and making the lives of all employees greener. But once the recycling center is set up, and the copier paper has been switched to a recycled content, what can these groups do to keep sustainability in the forefront?
