April 2015

 Note from Swim School

 We would like to thank everyone who participated in our Spring Break Five Packs. It was a blast!

Friendly reminder to have caps on your little swimmers to help keep their hair out of the eyes or mouth. Long pony tails, even those rubber banded, have a tendency to get in the way when breathing on certain strokes. Also - Band Aids are bad news for pool pumps and filters. Ick!

Thank you to everyone who has tried out our new online features, as always of you have any questions please call our front desk at either of our locations. Included in this edition are directions for use and a Parent FAQ for your convenience.

April is Adult Learn to Swim Month!

Summer is fast approaching, and this means it will be perfect weather to go hang out at the pool!  This may sound enjoyable to some but to those who don't know how to swim, it might seem like a daunting task.  Well guess what??  April is Adult Learn to Swim Month!  Nitro would love to help you reach your swimming goals!  We offer Adult Group Lessons for those new to swimming or are looking for more experience!  We even have a Masters group that practices in the mornings for the more experienced swimmer!  For more information on our adult programs, please visit our website or call us at either front desk!

Swimming isn't just a sport, it is also a life saving skill that every individual should have the opportunity to learn!  Below is a testimonial from one of our longtime Adult Lesson swimmers.

"My highlight on a freezing Austin morning is being able to swim all 23 lanes in a snake pattern, alternating between freestyle and breaststroke.  It's hard to believe that before joining in adult classes back in August 2013 I could not float on my back.  Freestyle swimming used be an exhaustive struggle. Nitro coaches helped me shun chili-cheese-tots with onions and coffee from the breakfast menu; which was my notion of curb load.  Now I stick to fruits and shake and enjoy laps on the perfectly maintained pool.  As I work on other strokes I like to give a round of thanks to everyone at Nitro and encourage everyone to swim."  --Zahed

What a fun way to practice at Home!

"Streamline!", shouts the coach and for good reason.  The moment right after diving in the water or pushing off the wall is very important.  Starts and turns generate a great deal of momentum for the swimmers and maintaining that energy going into the stroke can give the them a big advantage over their competitors.

For helping to build the core muscles, coordination and muscle memory needed for a strong streamline dolphin kick off the wall, swimmers can use a hula hoop, or flexy-straw for you Hudsucker Proxy fans.  After getting the hoop going, swimmers put their arms up and, holding a tight streamline, keep the hoop going with a strong body-wave motion.

It is important to focus on the wave motion while keeping the head still, pressing from the sternum first and letting the wave roll down the body.  This opposed to "hinging" the body at the hips while keeping their backs and legs straight.

See you at the pool and don't forget to streamline!

STATION HIGHLIGHT OF THE MONTH!

This Month's station highlight is on Nitro 1 station 4b.  Station 4b is probably one of the toughest stations in the Nitro 1 curriculum.  It is the first time our swimmers cross the width of the pool independently on their back and it is a big deal!  A lot of swimmers are still a little nervous swimming on their back because of the sensation of falling that you can have when floating or swimming.  It is also difficult for them to conceptualize the instructor having their hands under the swimmer prepared to catch them while not touching them.  Most swimmers get stuck on this station because they are uncomfortable on their back and the best way to work through that is consistency at home.

 Here are some things the Deck Instructors are looking for when swimmers are attempting to test out of Station 4b: pointed toes, propellant straight legs, belly up, face dry, paddling hands, no reaching for instructor, start off the wall independently, roll over and grab the wall independently to finish.

Homework:

An easy thing to practice in your bath tub is have you child lie down on their back with the tub half-filled and have them practice floating on their back getting more comfortable with it.  The more comfortable and confident a swimmer is the easier it is to work on the technique of pointing their toes and keeping their stomach pushed up staying at the surface for the water.

Inspiration with Nitro Swim

Meeting the Easter Bunny

On Easter morn at early dawn
before the cocks were crowing
I met a bob-tail bunnykin
and asked where he was going.
"Tis in the house and out the house
a-tispy, tipsy-toeing,
Tis round the house and 'bout the house
a-lightly I am going."
"But what is that of every hue
you carry in your basket?"
"Tis eggs of gold and eggs of blue;
I wonder that you ask it.
"Tis chocolate eggs and bonbon eggs
and eggs of red and gray,
For every child in every house
on bonny Easter day."
He perked his ears and winked his eye
and twitched his little nose;
He shook his tail -- what tail he had --
and stood up on his toes.
"I must be gone before the sun;
the east is growing gray;
Tis almost time for bells to chime." --
So he hippety-hopped away.

Meet your Nitro Swim School Instructors!

Sam - Cedar Park

Sam has been working at Nitro for a year and a half.  He is from Irving, TX and he started playing water polo his junior year of high school. Sam played water polo for two out of his four years at Texas Tech. During his free time, Sam enjoys watching soccer and traveling to different places.

"I like working at Nitro because it's full of excitement and pushes me to be a better instructor every day that I get into the pool. Swimming has had such an impact on my life and I love that I have the opportunity to teach all these skills to children and adults that come to Nitro."

Abby- Bee Cave

Abigail has been an Instructor at Nitro Swim Bee Cave for over 1 year. Abigail's sweet demeanor helps connect her with the younger swimmers making them more comfortable in a new environment.   She is a high school graduate from Roswell, NM and is currently pursuing a degree at ACC in Nutritional Science and Spanish.

"My favorite Swim stroke is the Breast Stroke, but butterfly is the most fun!  I love making a positive, encouraging difference in the kid's lives.  I remember how I felt at swim lessons as a kid, so I go based off of how I perceived things when I was in their shoes.  The reason why I enjoy working at Nitro is the moment when they finally pass a difficult station and their eyes light up, that's the best!"
