Babies Can Swim! When to begin swim lessons and why
By Lana Whitehead

Swimming is such fun and it is a wonderful way to stay healthy for life! Did you know that babies can develop a passion for swimming? They are born with a love for the water so parents can go together on an exciting adventure as their child learns about water and eventually learns to swim!

Before the age of three or four months, the bathtub is a perfect place for the little one to begin to developing a healthy relationship with this liquid medium. In his early training, the infant will experience a great deal of tactile stimulation from water resistance over his entire body. The water has over 600 times the resistance of air which is great for the muscles and it encourages neurological development too. The more tactile stimulation of the nerves the child experiences, the more that interconnections and neural pathways can develop in the brain cells. This touch and connection with the water between a parent and child can also establish a deeper emotional bond between the parent and child because they're face to face, skin to skin, touching in the water.

Chrissy  - Cedar Park

Chrissy has been a part of Nitro for 8 years!  She was a swimmer for the swim team, and then transitioned to the swim school to teach swim lessons.  In 2013, she graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelors degree in Kinesiology.  In addition to swimming, Chrissy enjoys competing in triathlons in her spare time.

"My favorite part of my job is helping the swimmers that are nervous in the water, and helping them realize how much fun the water can be!  I am truly blessed to have a job where I can help so many kids learn this amazing life-saving skill!"

Michael- Bee Cave

Michael has been at Nitro for almost 4 years.  He learned how to swim before he can remember and spent every summer in his backyard pool or surfing at the beach.  After High School he enlisted in the Army for 4 years and then attended college for 2 years before discovering his love of teaching children how to swim.

" I love seeing that moment of success after struggling with a skill for so long, my favorite station to teach is Nitro 1 station 4b. The best part is when they make it across the pool by themselves for the first time and look back to see how far they swam  with astonishment. That's the moment that always makes my day! "

STATION HIGHLIGHT OF THE MONTH!

NITRO 2 STATION 5

Treading water, No Goggle Survival Float and recover to wall. Treading water is when the swimmer stays in relatively one place using their arms and legs to keep their head above water. Note the difference between floating and treading is that when floating we allow our ears and back of our head submerge while in treading we keep them dry, The swimmer must tread water for 60 seconds. The survival float is when a swimmer jumps from the wall into the pool rolling on their back and floating for 10 seconds keeping their face dry with out moving their arms or legs. After ten seconds they must return to the wall, all of this must be accomplished without the use of goggles.

Christmas is a necessity.  There has to be at least one day of the year to remind us that we're here for something else besides ourselves.
