A Note from Swim School

Happy Thanksgiving from the Nitro Family! The holiday season is approaching quickly! We will be closing the Nitro Swim School in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, November 27th and Friday November 28th so that our staff can celebrate with their families and loved ones. If your child is scheduled in lessons on Thursdays or Fridays, your tuition for the month of November has been prorated in advance. We wish you and your family the best in the upcoming holiday season!
Sincerely,

Movement is Medicine: Exercise and Intelligence
-Dr. Chris Telesmanic

It is becoming increasingly obvious that the benefits of regular exercise go far beyond what was thought of conventionally. Of course exercise can help you lose weight, feel better, increase strength and reduce risk of injury. It also increases bone density, reduces anxiety, combats depression and prevents heart disease. But these are just some of the effects we have mentioned in previous columns. What's truly amazing is these effects only scratch the surface of what can be gained by exercising regularly. There is one more effect which we are coming to understand more fully, and that is that exercise actually makes you smarter. There is a steadily growing mountain of evidence that proves that regular exercise is directly linked to improved brain health and function. At some level, this has always been known. It was Plato who said, "In order for man to succeed in life, God provided him with two means, education and physical activity. Not separately, one for the soul and the other for the body, but for the two together. With these two means, man can attain perfection."

How do I Know If My Child is Progressing?

Nitro Swimming has a stations based curriculum. Because each swimmer progresses at their own rate, your swimmer's progression depends on their individual abilities. There are times that swimmers will pass multiple stations in one lesson, or it may take them several lessons at a certain station.  As soon as a swimmer performs the skill correctly for a station they are moved right to the next station, even if it is in the middle of the lesson. When a student passes a station mid-lesson, they usually stay in the same swim group and begin working on the next station. Check out our curriculum to find out what skills your swimmer is working on at a particular station or what skills are coming up next. Our curriculum is posted in the viewing room and available to view at the front desk. The front desk staff can tell you what station your child is on at the start of every lesson.

If you ever have questions about your swimmer's progress at Nitro, here are a few ways that you can get them answered.

  1. Nitro-Gram:  A Nitro-Gram is a great way to get and give feedback. Nitro-Grams are available in the viewing room, at the front desk, or through this link. Fill out the form and hand it in to the front desk, your deck instructor, or your swim school manager and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
  2. Speak with a deck instructor. To catch a deck instructor during class: At Cedar Park, walk to the yellow sign between the two pools and an instructor will come speak with you. At Bee Cave, check with the front desk staff and they will locate an instructor for you. Please be aware that our deck instructor are very busy ensuring the safety of all of all swimmers, so please be patient and they will speak with you as soon as they can.
  3. Contact your swim school manager. Stop by the front desk and grab their email address or see if they are available in person.

Meet your Nitro Instructors!!

Donna - Cedar Park

Donna grew up around the water and has been teaching for Nitro for 7 years!  As a swimmer herself, Donna was selected and placed for the USA in a dual swim meet against Canada, and she also held numerous age group State Champion titles.  She has passed off her love for swimming to her three children .  From introducing babies to their first pool experience and helping kids coordinate their skills while becoming comfortable with safety to reassuring adults who have never experienced water that they can learn and discover love of water. Donna loves every aspect of teaching whether beginners or stroke work with a competitive swimmer, it's always new, different and rewarding.

"Teaching is simply what I love! I take such joy in watching a child learn a new skill in the water and how excited and proud they are. I love teaching any level any age. Teaching is a passion and a privilege in my life. "

Justin - Bee Cave

Justin has been working at Nitro Swim Bee Cave for two years.  Justin's fun loving attitude and attention to detail have made him an integral part of the team in and out of the water.  He swam while attending High School at St. Xavier in Cincinnati, OH and then proceeded to attend Texas A&M.  His favorite stroke is "Butterfly or anything else I can sprint!"   Justin loves working at Nitro because...

"It is a great opportunity to teach a valuable life skill & to give back to the sport that has given me so much"

Carlos -Cedar Park

Carlos has been an instructor with Nitro since early 2013!  A native of Puerto Rico, Carlos grew up swimming and is passionate about all things water. He is an avid scuba diver and surfer, was a member of the Texas State Triathlon Team, and has played competitive water polo. He loves to share his joy with children and adults alike, and lives for the "aha!" moment when a student who has been struggling with a stroke finally conquers it. When not at Nitro, Carlos can be found experimenting in the kitchen, spoiling his beautiful wife, and chasing his two little girls, Amalie (5) and Leighton (4).

STATION HIGHLIGHT OF THE MONTH!

NITRO 1 STATION 7

20 yards backstroke.  Enter the pool safely from a sitting position on the side of the pool. While holding the wall with both hands, lift and place knees against the wall, next to chest, with toes pointed down, eyes looking up and ears in the water. Then let go of the wall with both hands and slowly stretch  out arms and legs while keeping the belly up and face dry with legs stretched out and together behind the swimmer and arms extended down to their side, while keeping their kicks at the surface of the water and their belly up they must lift their arms out of the water and rotate back behind in a full circle one at a time and alternating, for 25 yds.

Tips for Homework

Practice kicking on a bed laying on their back with their feet dangling work on straight legs and pointed toes, stretch tall in the mirror with our chin up and standing on our tip toes
