Why swim year-round?

Long Term Benefits:  Scientific studies of infant swimming, in Germany, have shown that the early stimulation develops the child in three key areas: physically, mentally and emotionally. Children who swam consistently from infancy were significantly stronger and more coordinated. The children also scored higher for intelligence and problem solving, which carried over into excellence and alertness in school. Emotionally, children who swim year-round were found to be more self-disciplined.

Water Safety: Swimming year-round is the best way to protect your child from the very real danger of drowning. It helps them retain a healthy respect for the water and build skills way beyond those of seasonal swimmers. Drowning isn't only a summer danger, and we need the opportunity to reinforce that concept.

What about sickness in cold weather?
Children who swim year-round are less likely to become ill than those with a less active lifestyle. Swimming doesn't directly cause inner ear infections, and swimmer's ear (outer ear infections) can be easily prevented by thoroughly drying out the ears after any water exposure: shower, baths or swim lessons.

What if they're tired from school?
School primarily involves  mental activity and sitting still. Young bodies need a fun outlet to vent and project their energy. Swimming invigorates like no other exercise -- it works all muscles in the body evenly on both sides and is aerobic and strength building.

What about other sports?
In addition to all the unique benefits, swimming actually helps children involved in other activities by improving their cardiovascular fitness and stamina

Nitro Volunteers at the Colin's Hope Kids Triathlon

Two weekends ago, the Colin's Hope Triathlon took place, a benefit for the charity of the same name increasing ways to help prevent drowning. We are the Premier Sponsor of that event. We had several Nitro kiddos participating and several Nitro staff volunteering to make it the great event that it is!

Meet your Nitro Instructors!!

JACOB  - Bee Cave

Jacob has been working at Nitro Swim Bee Cave for
two years.  He has an uncanny ability to connect with children by using high energy and having a fun personality, which truly shows during every class.  Jacob is a recent High School graduate who is attending his first year at ACC, then is planning to transfer to A&M Recruit Officers Training Course and enlisting in the United States Marine Corps.  Jacob's favorite stroke is Freestyle.

"I love my job because it allows me to spend time teaching necessary life skills to people of all ages and occasionally acting like a kid!"

Emily - Cedar Park

Emily has been apart of Nitro since she was 9 years old!  She began as a swimmer for Nitro, and then started as a Swim Instructor last year, and is now one of our Deck Instructors.  She is really great with the swimmers, and is very encouraging to them!    Emily is a senior in high school and swims the backstroke and medley relay for the swim team.  Swimming is a very prominent activity in Emily's life and we are so glad that she pass on everything that she has learned to our swimmers!

"After swimming for Nitro I thought it would be a great idea to share my passion for swimming and since I want to pursue a teaching career, why not start off as a swim instructor! It is entirely rewarding to know that I'm making a difference in these children's lives. "

Robert -Cedar Park

Robert joined the Swim School at Nitro in May 2014.  Robert enjoys teaching under the structured approach developed by Nitro that builds on skills from each station, allowing students to learn one critical element at a time, and seeing the students' progress at a much quicker pace with confidence built from the previous station.    In addition to teaching swimming, He is also a certified Master Scuba Diver Trainer, technical scuba diver, and owner/operator of Lake Travis Scuba!

"I love sharing my passion for all things water through teaching swimming, a very important life skill, to both children and adults.  Helping adults overcome a lifelong fear of the water, missing out on the opportunity to enjoy time with friends and family around water, is one of the greatest challenges and most rewarding aspects of teaching swim.  Swim and dive safely and often."

STATION HIGHLIGHT OF THE MONTH!

NITRO 2 STATION 9B

Breast Stroke is an advanced stroke that relies heavily on technique and rhythm.  There is a lot of focus on small details including the swimmer keeping their feet flexed and gliding after the kick.  The order for a proper Breast Stroke is Pull-Breath, Kick-Glide; you most likely have heard instructors repeating this over and over again during a lesson to help reinforce the rhythm.  Usually the most difficult part of the Breast Stroke is keeping the feet flexed during the kick.  This is because it is not a normal every day action that anyone uses.  For those unfamiliar with the term Flexed Feet imagine trying to walk around only on your heels without letting your toes touch the ground.  This also happens to be a great exercise to practice at home if your swimmer is having difficulties mastering the kick.  The other half of the Breast Stroke is the pull which is a small circular motion with the hands to help the swimmer push their head up out of the water.  One of the ways we like to explain it here is by making a small bowl of ice cream with your hands and then scooping it into your mouth as the swimmer lifts their head out of the water then reaching back out with both hands together face in the water while performing the kick and glide.  For more details about the Breast Stroke feel free to ask a Deck Instructor before or after your swimmers next class, we love answering questions! Or, see a front desk staff member for more ways to get informed!

Nitro has its first ever Junior World Champion in Taylor Abbott!

Taylor just won the 5k in Hungary at the Jr. Open Water World Championship's. Taylor led most of the race and pulled the field with him...then dropped them on the final lap in an unbelievably tough and inspirational race!

It was so nice to see Taylor's name with an American flag next to it! He represented our Nation well---to say the least!

Congratulations to Taylor's family...they deserve to be so proud.

Congratulations to Taylor's teammates...without your help and support in practice this would not have happened.

Everyone can share in this together!

Way to go Taylor and way to go U-S-A!!!!!!

Nitro Hosts the Special Olympics

Sunday September 21st, Nitro Bee Cave was jumping with activity! The Central Texas Special Olympics held their annual Swimming Competition for the 2nd straight year with us. This is a great organization, doing great things. We want to give a special shout out to the representatives from our USA team, Lauren Quincy's Mom who was a volunteer during the event (along with Lauren's brother). Also a special attaboy or "attaboys" to Garrett and Matthew Hailles - two of our Nitro athletes who were out volunteering as well.   Nice to see !

We appreciate you entrusting your swimmers to Nitro.  We are glad you are part of our program and we look forward to seeing you at the pool.

Thanks,
Nitro Swim School Staff
