THANKS to all of you who are embracing the depth of this foundational rhythmic pathway with my frame drum designs and symmetrical teaching method. I am eternally grateful to Cooperman and Remo for bringing to reality many years of dreaming about the perfect concert frame drum for serious professionals, and also the most universal drum on Earth. With extensive background in traditional Middle Eastern hand drumming, my sense of balance wanted both hands to be equally engaged with creative expression. As in daily life, we are accustomed to using our dominant hand for most everything, while the non-dominant hand is limited to a supporting role.
Athens, Greece: Finally in 1996, sitting in my small kitchen looking out over the city, I began to train my non-dominant hand. In a house of drums, I had one small frame drum with a frame narrow enough to hold and play equally with both hands, which I had purchased in Istanbul in the early 90's. At first there was a period of disorientation, while the image which became my logo was rotating inside my eyelids. As my non-dominant hand strokes became stronger, I looked for a name for the new bass stroke, since there was none in Middle Eastern hand drum technique. Many years later the name Gyn (pronounced geen) came to me as a phonetic match for the sound of Dum, the dominant-hand bass stroke. As a fluent Greek speaker, I suddenly realized that Gyn is the root of the word woman. It would have been logical to seek a name that balances the masculine associations with drumming, but this name was an unexpected gift from that side of things which may be hidden, but which makes possible the visible.
