 Consumables Corner: Hot/Compression Mounting Materials
By David Coulston, LECO Metallurgist
The majority of metallographic specimen mounting is achieved using a mounting press to encapsulate the specimen in a plastic mounting material, such as Bakelite, Epoxy, Diallyl Phthalate, or Lucite. The compression (aka "hot") mounting process accomplishes two main goals: (1) it improves handling of irregularly shaped samples (especially for automated specimen preparation) and (2) the mounting medium protects the specimen's edges to maintain the integrity of the surface features. |
