Bread of Life Food Pantry
This Sunday, as we do on every first Sunday of the month, we will present the Bread of Life Food Pantry donations at the offertory. This months offerings are especially needed because the food pantry is currently participating in the 16th Annual $1 Million Giveaway to Fight Hunger. The Alan Shawn Feinstein Foundation will award a grant to the pantry based on the amount of food and monetary donations we receive during March and April. During April, food items that are especially needed include peanut butter, cereal and crackers. Monetary donations in the form of checks should be made out to "Newman Congregational Church" with "Bread of Life Food Pantry" written in the memo.
13th Annual Pancake Breakfast- Also this Sunday the East Providence Lions Club is sponsoring a pancake breakfast with all proceeds to benefit the Bread of Life Food Pantry. The breakfast will include: pancakes, eggs, sausage, hash browns, muffins, coffee and juice and will be held at the E.P. Senior Center, 610 Waterman Avenue from 7:30-11:30 a.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children.

Dear Friend
If I had my way, the Gospel story we'd hear on Easter Sunday would be the story about the disciples' encounter with the Risen Jesus on the road to Emmaus. You probably remember the scene. Just hours after the women discover the empty tomb, two disciples are walking along a road a few miles outside Jerusalem. Not surprisingly, they're still dazed from everything that's just happened to them. Suddenly, a stranger joins them on their journey. When they arrive at a village at the end of the day, they ask the man to stay with them. While they are at the table together, the man takes bread, blesses it and breaks it. The eyes of the disciples are opened and they recognize him. It's Jesus! "Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road?"
After our celebration of Jesus' Resurrection last weekend, I feel like this whole week has been filled with surprise encounters with him. It seems like everywhere I've turned, my eyes have been opened to the Risen Lord. I saw him in the face of a dear parishioner in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit as Jennifer and I watched her open her eyes for the first time after open-heart surgery. I heard him in the relieved voice of a mother who received good news about her baby boy finally coming home from the hospital. I met him in the hope I encountered when I visited a man in the hospital who's become a regular at Church Beyond the Walls and who, despite many challenges, remains joyful. Then there were the broody cardinals chasing one another around outside my office window and the buds on the trees about to burst and the crocuses squeezing their slender flowers out of the cold earth-like those women at the tomb, the first to proclaim that death has been swallowed up and new life has begun!
I hope you'll join me in thanking God for all these blessings this weekend-either on Saturday as we proclaim the Risen Lord in the streets at Church Beyond the Walls or on Sunday as we proclaim him "within the walls." Come have your own eyes opened and your hearts warmed as we break together in his name.
Edmund

The Good Book Club

One of our parish goals for this year: Come closer to God by reading, studying and engaging the Bible in community, as individuals and as families.
This month we will begin an exciting new program called the Good Book Club, a book club unlike any other. You won't want to miss out as we read through "The Story" a thirty-one chapter narrative of the whole Bible. The Story is available for all ages and we hope that families, couples, and individuals will grow in their knowledge and love of God by participating in this journey. You can purchase an age appropriate copy of the book at church, or you can purchase it at your favorite bookseller. There are versions in audio, electronic reader format and good old-fashioned books.
Please come to the orientation for the Good Book Club, Sunday, April 21, 2013 at 9:15 in the Parish Hall. The Christian Education Commission and clergy will be on hand to share information and answer any questions. The program itself will kick off the following week, on Sunday, April 28.

Marriage Equality in RI - We're Almost There!

Although the RI House and our own East Providence City Council both agree that gay and lesbian people should have the freedom to marry, the fate of marriage equality in the State Senate remains uncertain. It might just be your voice that changes a conflicted senator's heart. Write a letter of support to your senator this Sunday. There will a letter-writing table in the Parish Hall after both services staffed by parishioners who will be happy to help you share your thoughts. Thank you!
