Omar Vargas, a sophomore at Denison University, is the October winner of USHLI's tablet raffle; a campaign to promote reading and to make books more affordable to young students. After learning of his selection Vargas said "Winning this tablet will help me be a more productive student. I will be able to do my readings on my tablet without having to waste money to make copies of my readings. It would also allow me to multitask easier with my assignments, classes, and my school extracurricular activities all within a portable device."
 Vargas' name was drawn from the list of individuals who  USHLI. A winner will be drawn every month. With this tablet, a student can access millions of books, magazines, songs, movies, TV shows, popular apps and games. In announcing the campaign, USHLI President Dr. Juan Andrade said, "It is common knowledge that students who read more do better in school, transition easier from one grade level to the next, have a better vocabulary and better language skills, are better writers and spellers, are more self-confident, do better on ACT and SAT scores, and are more likely to graduate and pursue post-secondary education or grad school." Established in 1982, USHLI is an award-winning Chicago-based national non-profit organization that promotes education, leadership development, civic engagement, and research, and advocates on behalf of the Latino community on major issues of social policy.
