Over 1,200 Students and Parents Attend Student Leadership
Series Events in Elgin

The 2013 Student Leadership Series (SLS) revisited Elgin, IL recently with program events presented at Kimball Middle School, Larsen Middle School, Canton Middle School, Ellis Middle School, Elgin High School, Larkin High School, and Streamwood High School.  An estimated 1,200 participants attended these events.  The overwhelming majority of students were English Language Learners.  USHLI is very grateful to Wilma Valero and Gina Crespo from the Elgin School District U-46 ELL Department for their leadership in arranging the events.  A Parent Leadership Training session was also held in the evening.

Our featured speakers were Dr. Ivonne Daz-Claisse , whose personal story and educational background  inspires students to pursue higher education and Roy Juarez, Jr., whose inspiring message of choosing forgiveness over bitterness, love over hate, reconciliation over anger, and triumph over tragedy resonated with the students as well as teachers.

SLS participating schools will see their students become better motivated, more involved in class and extracurricular activities, more determined to succeed academically and in life, and better prepared to enter the workforce.  Over 65,039 students, parents, and teachers in 19 states have been served this year.
