The 2013 Student Leadership Series (SLS) broke new ground in South Carolina with stops at Berea Middle School and Lakeview Middle School in Greenville, SC. USHLI is very grateful to Lee McElveen and The South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs for their partnership in arranging the events and the assistance provided by the South Carolina Hispanic Leadership Council.
Our featured speaker was Jimmy Cabrera, rated among the best motivational speakers in the nation. Students and teachers alike heard his clear and powerful message - believe in yourself, stay in school, improve your academic performance, fill your backpack with the life and academic skills needed to graduate high school and take advantage of the post-secondary options and financial aid available and be successful in life and career.
 Educators from non-participating schools who were invited to attend the events as observers were so impressed with the two SLS events that USHLI was invited to return in the fall to reach more students and dates were immediately set - September 27-28.
SLS participating schools will see their students become better motivated, more involved in extracurricular activities, ask more questions in class, perform better on tests, and more determined to succeed academically and in life. Absenteeism and truancy will decline. Their dropout rate will decrease and the graduation rate will increase as more and more students accept the challenge to navigate their way through the academic achievement pipeline toward success in life and career. Over 39,141 students in 15 states have been reached to date in 2013.
