Nearly 5,500 Students, Parents and Teachers Attend Student Leadership Series Events in Kansas

The 2013 Student Leadership Series (SLS) rolled into the Great Plains with stops in Garden City and Dodge City.  The events were held at Garden City High School, Comanche Middle School, Dodge City High School, and the Dodge City Civic Auditorium.  USHLI is very grateful to the Mayor of Roeland Park KS, Hon. Adrienne Foster, and the Kansas Hispanic and Latino American Affairs Commission (KHLAAC) for helping arrange the event in Garden City, and to Dr. Robert Vinton and the Migrant Education program for arranging the events in Dodge City.

Our featured speaker was Ernesto Mejia, co-founder of CoolSpeak, LLC. Ernesto speaks to students, parents and teachers about overcoming obstacles and never giving up on the American dream: Education.

SLS participating schools will see their students become better motivated, more involved in class and extracurricular activities, perform better in class and on tests, and more determined to succeed academically and in life.  Absenteeism and truancy will decline.  Their dropout rate will decrease and the graduation rate will increase as more and more students accept the challenge to navigate their way through the academic achievement pipeline toward success in life and career.  Over 36,971 students in 13 states have been reached to date in 2013.

Persons interested in hosting an SLS event in 2013 should contact Dr. Juan Andrade at docandrade@ushli.org or Martha Villegas at mvillegas@ushli.org.
