|
Over 100 Omaha students, most of them high school students, were honored at our 31st National USHLI Conference for successfully completing USHLI's 9-week Grassroots Leadership Development Program (GLDP). To participate in a GLDP every student who is a citizen of voting age has to be registered to vote and have at least a 3.0 GPA. For the second consecutive year the group included a Gates Millennium Scholar.

Students met with city officials for three weeks to learn more about how city government works and to educate city officials on how the Latino community could be better served. They met with school officials for three weeks and with county officials for three weeks, also to learn more about how those governmental entities work and to educate those officials on how the Latino community could be better served as well. The sessions were for three hours each for a total of 27 hours. They were held in the evenings after school. The students and their adult sponsors raised over $15,000 to cover their conference costs of travel and lodging.
Students from the University of Illinois Springfield completed our GLDP
and were also recognized at the conference. For more information on how to get involved in our leadership development programs, please contact Adrian Calderon at 312.427.8683 or acalderon@ushli.org
