 Over 2,750 Students Attend

Student Leadership Series Event

in Salt Lake City

The 2013 Student Leadership Series (SLS) headed west in March, partnering with Latinos in Action in highly successful events in Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah.  2,750 students representing over 60 high schools attended events hosted by the Utah Valley University and Weber State University. The Director of Latinos in Action, Dr. Jose Enriquez, works with students throughout the year to improve their academic performance, develop their leadership skills, and to provide them the cultural support needed to be well-adjusted and successful leaders in their community. The program has been recognized for its impact on student achievement and the successful social integration of the Latino community.

The featured speaker was Marlen Esparza, the first Latina to box in the Olympics.  CoolSpeakers Carlos Ojeda, Ernesto Mejia, Lina Traslavina, Joey Negron, and Joaquin Zihuatanejo led workshops on a variety of topics.

SLS participating schools will see their students become better motivated and more determined to succeed academically and in life.  Their dropout rate will decrease and the graduation rate will increase.  Over 16,478 students have been reached to date in 2013.

The Student Leadership Series is USHLI's flagship youth program, and one of six youth programs offered by USHLI. The goal of the SLS is to introduce students to the full range of post-secondary options and  help them chart their individualized course through the academic achievement pipeline and success in life and career.

Together with our super-talented, innovative, energetic, interactive, uplifting and inspiring speakers, USHLI is able to offer SLS events that will empower students at all levels, parents, as well as educators.

Persons interested in hosting an SLS event in 2013 should contact Dr. Juan Andrade at docandrade@ushli.org or Martha Villegas Miranda at mvillegas@ushli.org
