USHLI to Honor Dolores Huerta at 31st National Conference in Chicago

Dolores Huerta, the 5th Hispanic in history to be honored by both the President of the United States and the government of Mexico, will be honored at the 31st National Conference of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute, which will be held in Chicago, IL on February 14-17, 2013.  She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012 at the White House and years ago received the National Ohtli Award, Mexico's highest honor presented to a Mexican or Mexican American not living in Mexico.

Dolores Huerta will receive the inaugural presentation of the Dolores Huerta Woman of Courage Award. In making the announcement, USHLI President Dr Juan Andrade said "Dolores Huerta is the matriarch of the Latino movement for civil rights, voting rights, human rights, women's rights, immigrant rights, and for social and economic justice.  During her 50-year journey as a community organizer and social activist, she has been at the forefront of every major battle that Latinos have fought in this country.  It is our privilege to establish this award in her honor and present to her our inaugural award."  The presentation of the award will be at 7:30am, Friday, February 15, during the Latina Empowerment Breakfast.

Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers Union.  She is the most celebrated Latina in the nation.  Her life and work has been validated at the highest levels and the broadest range, e.g., honored by two U.S. Presidents, two governments, nine universities (honorary doctorates), foundations, women's groups, legislative bodies, government agencies, schools (six named in her honor), publications, etc.

Over 6,000 present and future leaders representing 40 states are expected to attend our 31st National Conference.  As in years past, over 60% of conference participants will be 18-34 years of age and female, and over 80% will be college graduates or currently attending college.  For more information about our national conference, or to register to attend, please click here.
