An estimated 600 Lynn English High School students, teachers, counselors and administrators attended our Student Leadership Series event held in Lynn, MA last week. A Parent Leadership Training program was also conducted. The purpose for the day-long program was to encourage students to stay in school, improve their academic performance, graduate, and plan to pursue some kind of post-secondary education or training, e.g., vocational, technical, trade, community college, 4-year university, or military. The parents, many of whom are immigrants and whose children are enrolled in ESL classes or at risk of not completing high school, received training on how to assist and more effectively encourage their children to stay in school.
USHLI is very grateful to Dr. Dale Trevino, Director of Diversity at the Harvard School of Public Health, and the New England Coordinating Committee for their leadership in organizing this event, and Mr. Thomas Strangie, Principal , and the entire staff and faculty at Lynn English High School for their support of our SLS program and commend them all for their tremendous efforts in providing their students the best education and the best opportunities possible. The featured speaker and trainer was Marcella Aldaz-Matos.
This was our 54th SLS event of 2012, bringing the total number of students, parents, and professionals served to 60,626 in 24 states. The 2013 SLS will begin in January and officially launch on February 14th. Our goal will be to reach 100,000 students, most of whom will be economically disadvantaged and/or will be the first in their family to graduate high school, pursue post-secondary education or training, or obtain a post-secondary degree or certificate.
With our fresh, energetic, interactive, uplifting and empowering approach, our critically acclaimed SLS presentations focus on Stay-in-School Rallies for middle school and junior high students, Career & College Recruitment Fairs for high school students, Regional Leadership Summits for college students, and, whenever possible, Parent Leadership Training and Professional Development events. Persons interested in hosting SLS events in 2013 should contact Dr. Juan Andrade at docandrade@ushli.org
