An estimated 75 college and high school students participated in our Student Leadership Summit in Chicago, IL. The focus of the Summit was to encourage students to vote and help get-out-the-vote on Election Day. Government agencies and Graduate schools provided information and students attended breakout sessions on graduate school opportunities, internships with the federal government, and budgeting & credit.
The event was hosted at the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning by Ricardo Lopez, a former USHLI Field Coordinator and now a Latino Outreach Associate at CMAP. The networking and team building activities were led by Adrian Calderon, which included a special presentation by The Cuban Guy from Miami. The featured speakers on Saturday were IL Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and Dr. Juan Andrade. The closing session featured USHLI Field Coordinator and Research Associate Luis Quijano who introduced a new video-based scholarship contest.
This was our 43rd SLS event of 2012. The next stop for the Student Leadership Series is Oklahoma City, OK (11-16).
The primary goal of the Student Leadership Series is to ensure that every Latino family has a student that is one of the following: the 1st student to graduate high school; the 1st student to enroll in post-secondary education or training; the 1st student to graduate post-secondary education or training. The USHLI 2012 Student Leadership Series officially launched February 16th and consists of Stay-in-School Rallies for middle school and junior high students, Career & College Recruitment Fairs for high school students, Regional Leadership Summits for college students, and, whenever possible, Parent Leadership Training and Professional Development events.
Persons interested in hosting SLS events in 2013 should contact Dr. Juan Andrade at docandrade@ushli.org.
